George Mason's Gunston Hall is more than just a beautiful home. Eighteenth-century Virginians found messages in architecture, land use, and landscape design that are somewhat different from those we see today. The Masons expected their house and grounds toMASON & SLAVERY
Mason & Slavery. George Mason inherited 35 people from his father’s estate. Ultimately, he enslaved at least 300 people, many of whom lived on his property on Mason Neck. We know the names of a few of these people such as James, who spent his days as George Mason’s valet, and Nell, who was a midwife and an enslaved house servant. He was likely the second largest enslaver in Fairfax County (after George Washington). Mason’s lengthy last will and testament listed 36enslaved workers
RIVERSIDE GARDEN RESTORATION The riverside garden restoration is the culmination of more than four decades of archaeological research. Both staff and consulting archaeologists have gathered evidence from dig sites. Staff, volunteers, and interns have conducted years of documentary research. And staff have learned from the inspiring work done at other sites inthe region

I n the 1930s, Louis Hertle, then owner of Gunston Hall, began considering ways to preserve this historic property. It was the wish of his late wife, Eleanor Daughaday Hertle, that Gunston Hall become a memorial to George Mason. Gunston Hall’s archaeology staff and volunteers explore, excavate, conduct on-site lab work, prepare reports analyzing their finds, and of course, educate our visitors. Inside Gunston Hall. Gunston Hall can be divided into three major sections: the formal rooms, the family rooms, and the upstairs bed chambers. The formal rooms are made up of the dining room and the great parlor. Each of these is decorated lavishly and must haveHOURS AND ADMISSION

They soon decided to build a new, fashionable home for their growing family. They located their new house near the Potomac and called it Gunston Hall. The Mason family at Gunston Hall took different shapes at different times. Ann and George moved into Gunston Hall with numerous children. With births, deaths, and marriages, the householdevolved.

Mason & Slavery. George Mason inherited 35 people from his father’s estate. Ultimately, he enslaved at least 300 people, many of whom lived on his property on Mason Neck. We know the names of a few of these people such as James, who spent his days as George Mason’s valet, and Nell, who was a midwife and an enslaved house servant.GEORGE MASON
A devoted family man, a shrewd business man, an independent thinker, a slave owner, and a political thinker, Mason was a complicated person. Staff and volunteers at Gunston Hall have spent years researching Mason and his world. Scholars at other institutions have added greatly to this body of knowledge. There is still much for all of us to learn. GEORGE MASON'S VIEWS REGARDING SLAVERY George Mason’s Views Regarding Slavery. George Mason held men, women, and children in bondage until the end of his life. He was likely the second largest enslaver in Fairfax County (after George Washington).
