An estimated 15% of all pregnancies per year in Latin America occur in girls younger than 20 years old, and 2 million children in the region are born to mothers between the ages of 15 and 19.. According to a recent report – ‘Accelerating Progress toward the CERVICAL CANCER: A THREAT TO WOMEN IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES Cervical Cancer: a Threat to Women in Developing Countries. More than half a million women develop cancer of the cervix every year. It is the fourth most frequent cancer type worldwide and the global mortality rate remains high at 52%. Of the estimated 270 000 deaths each year, more than 85% occur in less developed regions. HOW TO SUPPORT SURVIVORS OF SEXUAL VIOLENCE In December 2019, I was chatting with Tori Amos. I mentioned that I just returned from three years working with girls in the Middle East. Most of these girls were from Syria, where rape is used to terrorize in the ongoing civil war. LEGAL YET STIGMATIZED: ABORTION CARE IN NEPAL Nepal legalized abortion in 2002. With the recent adoption of “The Right to Safe Motherhood and Reproductive Health Act” in 2018, the country has taken huge strides for the fulfilment of the sexual and reproductive health needs of women and girls. CURRENT THREATS TO SAFE AND LEGAL ABORTION IN SOUTH AFRICA The COVID-19 pandemic has also worsened the experiences of women. They are disproportionately suffering the burdens of COVID-19 on the healthcare system. One of the current threats to access to abortion in South Africa is the issue of fetal burial. The case of Voice of the Unborn Baby v Minister of Home is currently pending in our courtsystem.
ACCESSING ABORTION DURING A PANDEMIC Reduced services, combined with the fear and stigma associated with accessing abortion care, has led many women to seek illegal, often unsafe services, which they may feel are more ‘confidential’.
