“BROADCASTING HOPE” PUBLIC MEDIA GRANT Following a particularly tumultuous year as a nation, one thing is clear: while masks and vaccines might allow us to physically come closer, the humanities and the constructive dialogues they foster will truly enable us to be closer. Florida Humanities’ “Broadcasting Hope” Public Media Grant provides up to $20,000 in funding to Florida public media stations to produce impactful public COMMUNITY PROJECT GRANTS Florida Humanities awards grants – known as Community Project Grants – to nonprofit organizations and public institutions across Florida whose projects strengthen vibrant communities and cultures, promote civic engagement, spark thoughtful community dialogue, and reflect on the human experience across the Sunshine State. When it comes to telling the story of an endangered waterway, who better to call upon than those who have spent their lives upon its waters? That’s how Captain Eddie Wightman came to sit down with Emma Haydocy, executive director of Florida Bay Forever Save Our Waters, to recount some 70-plus years of his memories of the Bay, including 53 years as a fishing guide. During the 25 years leading up to the Civil War, a five-county region of North Florida grew into a virtual barony of plantations and farms that echoed the wealthiest precincts of the Old South cotton kingdom. The vast majority of Florida’s slaves lived in this central part of the Panhandle along the Georgiaborder.

One of the oldest and rarest cattle breeds in the U.S., these small, hardly animals are a tough as the landscape they camefrom.

FLORIDA HUMANITIES CARES With the passage of the CORONAVIRUS AID, RELIEF, AND ECONOMIC SECURITY(CARES) ACT
on
March 27, 2020 the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) received $75 million to distribute to cultural institutions affected by the coronavirus, COVID-19. Approximately 40 percent of the appropriation, or $30 million, was entrusted to the 56 state and territorial humanities councils to re-grant to our communities. AS THE STATEWIDE AFFILIATE FOR THE NEH , FLORIDA HUMANITIES IS HONORED TO GRANT $875,000 IN EMERGENCY FUNDS THROUGH FLORIDA HUMANITIES CARES TO CULTURAL AND HERITAGE INSTITUTIONS ACROSS FLORIDA AFFECTED BY THE CORONAVIRUS CRISIS. Florida Humanities CARES provides vital funding to support general operating expenses for our most vulnerable cultural organizations and communities so that they can continue to provide opportunities for our state’s diverse communities to access and engage with public history, cultural heritage, and civic learning during this unprecedented time and in the future.
