Players learn about the IceCube observatory at the South Pole and the neutrinos they detect. RESEARCH - FIELD DAY At Field Day, we research games to understand how people learn and how we can design more effective games. We believe games are powerful tools for learning, but we need more detailed insight into exactly why and how. (Inspired by the theoretical argument for games described by Jim Gee and Kurt Squire’s work, our call to action is epitomized ABOUT US - FIELD DAY Eric has a knack for story development, world building, and general strategy and vision-casting. Eric cares about making games that are fun, compelling, and amazingly weird. His favorite era is the 1980’s, his favorite futuristic digital landscape painter is Simon Stålenhag, and his favorite bread is sourdough. ARIS Basics. Are you a beginner? Need some help? This is the place for you! There is no question, technical, design or logistical that doesn't belong right here. LOST AT THE FOREVER MINE Use Lost at the Forever Mine to introduce units on graphing or scientific modeling. The game was designed to help kids experience the need for math to make predictions. This story-based game gives a context to why graphing, math equations, and collecting data can help us solve problems. Try introducing a unit with this game. FIELD DAY COURSES: INTRODUCTION TO SIFTR Join Jim Mathews from Field Day to learn how to use Siftr to extend learning beyond the classroom. This course provides an introduction to Siftr, a platform designed to support and facilitate fieldwork within groups or communities, such as classrooms or organizations. FIELD DAY COURSES: PLAYING AND TALKING ABOUT GAMES In this game we are going to learn how to talk about the games we play and love. We will be looking at the various aspects of a game’sdesign, such as:
FIELD DAY COURSES: AUGMENTED REALITY IN ARIS Remember thos cool moving newspapers and talking paintings in the Harry Potter movies? In this short course, you will learn how to create effects just like that using the Augmented Reality features in ARIS.. By the end of this 10 minute course, you should be able to: FIELD DAY - ATOM TOUCH About Atom Touch. AtomTouch is a molecular simulation app, created through a partnership between UW MRSEC and Field Day Lab. It allows learners to explore principles of thermodynamics and molecular dynamics in a tactile, exploratory way. The simulation was developed to help students understand the structures and attributes of particlesat the
