10/04/20 at 10:46PM UTC I love this idea and will definitely give it a try. Another scheduling philosophy (kudos to Ari Meisel) that I've been able to integrate into my work schedule is to schedule all my recurring /client meetings on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. That way Mondays and Fridays become less stressful and more project-focused days. And if there aren't a lot of urgent projects, it can also make you feel like you've got an extended long weekend. It really is all about the mindset and feelingof productivity.

06/05/21 at 12:15PM UTC The hiring manager of another department in my company notified me about a job opening which I am interested in applying for. Company HR policy states if you are applying for an internal transfer, you need to let your manager know. I am not comfortable letting my manager know, for a few reasons. Most importantly, I don't want to damage our relationship if I am not successful with the transfer request. I would really like to apply for this opportunity but am hesitant for fear of repercussions. Would appreciate hearing others'experiences ...More

47Director of Operations & Corporate Secretary 06/05/21 at 2:29PM UTC I have been in your manager's shoes. If this person is the least bit reasonable and interested in your professional development (which they should be given their role), they will not take this personally and should encourage you to go after your career goals. In my case, a team member approached me about an internal opening, and me, the team member, and the potential new manager spoke candidly about her candidacy and what a transfer would look like throughout the process. She got the role and we planned a smooth transition that worked out really well; wins for everyone. My advice is: Go for it!Reply

I could really use some help! I received a job offer end of day Thursday due this coming Monday. Knowing that women often do not negotiate and the salary being slightly under my first pay, I prepared a email response with a slightly higher figure for their consideration. The role is in a non-profit so I purposely chose a smaller number rather than a higher figure they can negotiate down so they wouldn't feel I ...More5 comments

06/05/21 at 3:16PM UTC How can we make the case for remote work post-covid? It seems like remote work is more inclusive for those with mobility and health issues, it levels the playing field for caregivers, it has the potential to increase diversity by allowing people to team together across geographies, it’s better for the environment by reducing the need for long commutes, etc, etc. I don’t personally feel a difference in my personal connections made over zoom or in person, and empty ...MoreComment

06/05/21 at 12:08PM UTCNeed some advice.
I started a new job about 2 months ago. I have 10+ years of experience in my field and have run large implementations and teams. I was under the impression that they desperately needed someone with my BA abilities to restructure their system and processes. But I am now reporting to someone who is only 6 years out of college and this is the only job she has had so she has no experience in the "wider world". She sees ...More5 comments

06/05/21 at 2:35PM UTC Understand your frustration. Can I make a completely separate suggestion. Avoid any communication about the lead in the meeting, redirect the conversation to your own performance and what you need from him to be successful. It sounds from your description that you are less than clear about why you weren’t selected to lead the project. Get feedback from him about areas where you can grow, development opportunities and explain how you’d like to see your career grow within the company. Over the next few months, if you see no changes, then you may consider transitioning out of theorganization.

06/04/21 at 3:47PM UTC I was in the middle of my doctor appointment when my phone rang. I apologised to the doctor and let the phone in my purse ring into my voice mail. When I was done, I checked my messages and it was a call for an interview. It was not five o'clock yet, so I called but no one answered, and there was no recording for voice mail. I called just after eight this morning, and was told that because I wasn't available for an immediate on the spot interview they chose someone else. They...More

This is one of the most uncomfortable and in my mind unprofessional situation I have been in. I got a job offer a week and a half ago, it was not a job that I was loving I kind of had to talk myself into it. I was working on another, and better opportunity for my dream role at the same time. I have been jerked around so much with companies, and what I mean is A company interviewed me for 11 weeks just to tell meno. ...More

06/03/21 at 7:47PM UTC As a recruiter I’m responsible for declining candidates. The worst part of my job. I usually wait till a candidate is selected before notifying the others. Sometimes this can take weeks. Seems everyone who gets declined is upset with the way they were notified. If you aren’t selected- how would you like to be notified? What’s the best way so the candidate has a good experience?7

06/05/21 at 1:36PM UTC 1. Have a standard email template. 2. If you're rejecting one of the finalists, give him the honest answer. " All things being equal we picked the other candidate because he is _____". 3. Communicate to internal staff and leadership and streamline the interview process and be clear on what you're looking for for in each role before you post the job listing. This way you're not scrambling when candidates apply.Reply
