Q & A
Welcome to Santa Monica, California! Known for its sunshine, beaches, surf culture, and palm trees, this city also boasts the world famous Santa Monica pier, the first concrete pier built on the west coast. WHERE IS SANTA MONICA? Santa Monica is a city on the coast of southern California, west of downtown Los Angeles. It was established in 1875 by Nevada Senator John P. Jones, who sought to create an oceanside resort town.WHERE IS THIS CAM?
Positioned at Shangri-La Hotel, this live beach cam pans from the sandy beaches of Malibu and the Santa Monica Mountains behind them, all the way to the Santa Monica pier, the gorgeous blue-green waters of the Pacific as a backdrop. On a clear day, you can see almost 40 miles north to Point Mugu! WHAT IS THE SANTA MONICA PIER? The Santa Monica Pier is a 1,600 ft. concrete walkway extending into the ocean. Occupied by restaurants, shops, an aquarium as well as fishermen and street performers, the pier draws over four million visitors every year. Although this treasured landmark is taken for granted by many visitors and residents, its history is surprisinglytumultuous!
WHEN WAS THE PIER BUILT? Known originally as as the Municipal Pier, the pier officially opened to the public on September 9, 1909. Thousands of people flocked to the pier to stroll above the Pacific and enjoy the swimming races, music, and fresh sea air. The pier's original purpose was less charming; it was initially built to house a large pipe that emptied sewage into the ocean. Fortunately, this system was shut down permanently in the1920s.
WHEN WAS THE AMUSEMENT PARK BUILT? Not surprisingly, the idyllic location of the pier and the sheer number of visitors sparked the interest of local entrepreneurs. In 1916, carousel magnate Charles Looff purchased land adjacent to the pier and built the "Pleasure Pier," which included a Hippodrome and an ornate carousel. This started a flurry of development around the pier that included the La Monica Ballroom, the Santa Monica Yacht Harbor and, later on, Muscle Beach, which helped establish Santa Monica as the mecca for physical fitness. Most of these original structures are no longer standing and are not visible on the Santa Monica beachcamera.
HAS THE PIER ALWAYS BEEN POPULAR? As theme parks like Disneyland began to take hold in the 1950s and 1960s, many of the pier's surrounding structures began to disappear, but the original pier remained a tourist attraction. In 1973, the decided to tear down the visibly aging concrete walkway and build in its place a small man-made island better suited to hotels and restaurants. As the destruction date approached, local residents objected fiercely, delivering numerous petitions until the councilrelented.
Ten years later, the violent winter storms of 1983 destroyed a third of the pier, including many shops and cafes. The storm's damage reinvigorated the city's effort to demolish the pier, but once again, residents resisted, forming the Pier Restoration and Development Task Force. The residents prevailed; by 1990, the pier was completely back in business with new shops and restaurants. In 1996, an adjacent amusement park was opened. Today, the warm and welcoming lights of the pier's large ferris wheel can be seen from miles around.COMMENTS
