ABOUT EARTH WISE
About Earth Wise From green business and new environmental legislation to how nature impacts our environment in ways never before considered, Earth Wise offers a look at our changing environment every day through public radio. About The Host: Randy Simon Randy Simon has over 30 years of experience in renewable energy technology, materials research, superconductor HYDROGEN-POWERED JETLINERS Airbus, the giant European aerospace company, hopes to have hydrogen-powered commercial airliners in the sky by 2035. COMPOST AND LANDFILLS The new research shows that using compost as an alternative daily cover at landfills is competitive and often superior to the use of compost as a soil amendment in terms of its environmental benefits. Landfills apply a layer of daily cover to reduce odors, reduce windblown debris, and keep vermin out of landfill waste. Federalregulations

A recent study published in Fisheries Research looked at the effectiveness and level of waste for various categories of fishing gear used in the global fishing industry. They found that two types of fishing gear – bottom trawling and purse seining – account for 53% of all catches. Furthermore, bottom trawling alone dominated discardedcatch.
THE CARBON FOOTPRINT OF YOUR HOUSEHOLD TRASH Trash is transported by truck, train, or even ship—all of which use fossil fuels. Recycling makes us feel virtuous, but it also has a carbon footprint. Bottles, cans, paper, and household hazardous wastes are transported to distant recycling facilities. Electronic waste is sometimes transported across the ocean to China or India. HOOVER DAM AS A GIANT BATTERY Hoover Dam As A Giant Battery. Back in the 1930s, building Hoover Dam was a public works project likened to the pyramids. Hoover Dam helped transform the American West, harnessing the force of the Colorado River to power millions of homes and businesses. Now, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power wants to equip Hoover Dam with a $3 IMPROVING WAVE ENERGY Improving Wave Energy. Ocean energy is still one of the biggest untapped clean energy sources on the planet. There are many studies that have shown that it could provide power for millions of homes in the U.S. alone. But despite this, the technology is still in its infancy and it is unclear when and if it can become a majorcontributor to our
ARE ALL INVASIVE SPECIES BAD? In fact, a recent study concluded that alien species are the second most common threat associated with species that have gone completely extinct since 1500 A.D. Despite all of this, there is a growing number of scientists that challenge the view that all invasive species are destructive; they contend, in fact, that some are even beneficial. THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS OF HAIR SALONS The environmental impacts of hair salons. Hair salons have a certain fragrance. You always know when you’re in one. No surprise, since nearly 5000 chemicals are listed as products for hair care, including 3300 synthetic compounds. Beyond the shampoo and conditioner, there are hair dyes, oils, propellants, and various sprays to keep hair inplace.

THE NEW NORMAL WEATHER The study indicates that people have short memories when it comes to what they consider normal weather. On average, most people base their idea of normal weather on what has happened in just the past two up to maybe eight years. This disconnect with the historical climate record may obscure the public’s perception of climate change. CARBON DIOXIDE AND BEES The decline of bee populations worldwide is a serious problem that threatens much of agriculture. From 2006 to 2011, losses in managed honeybee colonies in the U.S. averaged 33 percent a year. In recent years, beekeepers have had to replace 50 percent of their colonies each year. The answer lies largely in tiny marine plants called plankton, which gives off oxygen. Over eons of geologic time, marine plankton died, burying their organic matter at sea. Because they didn’t decompose, they didn’t use up atmospheric oxygen. Some of this ancient marine matter has been transformed into the fossil fuels we use today. HYDROGEN FROM THE OCEAN Hydrogen From The Ocean. Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe. Estimates are that it comprises 75% of all matter. There is plenty of it here on earth too, but almost none of it is in its elemental form. It is mostly bound up in compounds like water. REDUCED WASTE FROM MODULAR CONSTRUCTION Our nation’s landfills are overflowing and we are constantly seeking ways to reduce the amount of waste that needs to go into them. Usually, we are thinking about food waste, plastics, glass and paper. However, one of the largest sources of waste generation is actually construction and demolition waste. There is a great deal of interest in protecting nature and, in many cases, restoring aspects of nature that have been lost. But what do these things really mean? What is most important? Protecting iconic species? Strengthening nature’s resilience? Several recent scientific papers address these questions and come up with rather different answers.
