LIFE AFTER DEATH
By Lanitra BJ Harris On September 07, 1996, Tupac Amaru Shakur was shot multiple times by a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas. Six days later, he died. I was 15 yrs. old when he was murdered. I knew of him, but it wasn’t until I was well into my 20’s that I began to follow him. That sounds crazy huh? How do you follow someone who is dead? Easy! I follow Tupac through the work he left behind. Through television shows like _A Different World_ that he guest appeared on. Through films like _Juice_, _Gridlock’d_ and one of my favorite movies _Poetic Justice_ that he starred in. But most importantly, I follow Tupac through his music. In 2002, while I was studying in one of the libraries at the University of San Diego, I met a girl named Dana. Unbeknownst to me, Dana was (I should say IS) one of Tupac’s biggest fans. Who would have guessed that this 5’3, petite framed, white girl from Carlsbad would be into Tupac! I didn’t! She most definitely taught me my greatest lesson in life… DON’T JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER. I mean she had EVERY single album that Tupac ever made. And here it is six years AFTER the death of Tupac, I’m sitting in Dana’s Toyota 4 runner (with two sub-woofer speakers that would make anyone’s ears go deaf) and we are jamming to Tupac’s music. Over the years, I can’t count how many hours we spent listening to Tupac and debating on which album was his best album or which song was his greatest song of all time. Hell, he was still releasing music after his death. Seven of his eleven albums were released posthumously. Think about that for a moment. Tupac died in 1996 and yet has sold over 75 million records worldwide since his death. If you didn’t know any better, you would assume that Tupac was still alive. And of course, there are many (and I stress MANY) who still believe Tupac is somewhere overseas, sipping cocktails with his feet up. And here lies my question, why can’t we let this man go? What is it about Tupac that causes us to fantasize about the possibility of him still being alive? We don’t have these ideas about anyone else. I haven’t heard anyone claim that Marvin Gaye is still alive, or that Bob Marley has been seen eating tacos in San Diego. I think this notion of Tupac being alive steams from the last album released afterhis death.
Makaveli was released eight weeks after Tupac died. Before his death, he started to refer to himself as “Makaveli”. He created this alias “Makaveli” after he read about an Italian war strategist and philosopher by the name of Nicolo Machiavelli. Nicolo wrote about faking his death to fool his enemies. To add to this belief of Tupac being alive, there is his look-a-like, Demetrius Shipp Jr. After Tupac’s “death”, a movie was made about his life and Demetrius played him. I had to do a double take to see if it was in fact Demetrius and not Tupac. These two men look so much alike. So imagine, in 2017 (21 yrs. after Tupac’s death) a movie about his life called _All __Eyes On Me _premiered and the man who plays Tupac is walking around giving interviews, is a dead ringerfor Tupac.
Another reason that cuased many to believe Tupac is still alive was the confession of David Myers, a retired police officer in Las Vegas, who claimed that he was paid to help Tupac fake his own death. Whether you believe Tupac is in fact dead or enjoying the sunsets off the coast of Hawaii, we can agree that those who love him are grieiving for the man who once was. Dr. Phil (who I call America’s phychologist) wrote a book which he discusses the steps that we need to take in order to get through the loss of a love one. There are ninesteps:
* Be Patient With Yourself: Accept what happens. * Adjust Your Expectations: Accept that your emotions are a natural part of the grieving process. * Accept What You Cannot Change: Accepting the reality of your loss and letting go of a past that you cannot bring back. * Find Strength In Others * Don’t Get Stuck: Return to being the person you were before theloss.
* Recognize That Time Is Infinite: You are not here forever and neither is anybody you love. * Create Value From This Experience * Think ABout How You Will Prepare For Your Own Death * Celebreate Life: Life doesn’t stop just because that person isnot alive.
It is my humble opinion that the fans of Tupac haven’t gone through these steps completely. They are stuck within the grieving process. They are still holding on. And because of this, Tupac lives. He is just as relevant (probaly even more) today as he was 30 years ago. His estate is worth 40 million plus and that number grows as theyears pass by.
So, if you ever wonder if there is life after death, think about TupacShakur.
