BACKSTORY: Disneyland is one of my favorite theme parks to visit. Below, you will find alphabetical links that will take you to photo pages featuring vintage (that I have collected over the years) and current images (shot by yours truly) of each area of the park. The dates in red let you know what pages are either new or have beenrecently updated.
DAVELAND DISNEYLAND HOTEL PHOTOS Disneyland Hotel. BACKSTORY (Oct. 5, 1955–Present): First “Disney” hotel although not Disney owned until 1988. Disneyland construction costs kept Disney from building a hotel. Disney approached a number of hotel chains in 1954, but all felt that the Disneyland venture was too risky. DAVELAND DISNEYLAND NEW ORLEANS SQUARE PHOTOS New Orleans Square. BACKSTORY (July 24, 1966 —Present): New Orleans Square is exclusive to Disneyland, based on 19th century New Orleans. At the opening, Walt Disney made then-mayor of the real New Orleans, Victor H. Schiro, the mayor of New Orleans Square. Before New Orleans Square was built, Holidayland stood in its place. DAVELAND DISNEYLAND TOM SAWYER ISLAND PHOTOS Tom Sawyer Island. BACKSTORY (JUNE 16, 1956–FEB. 5, 2007): Names originally considered for the island were “Mickey Mouse Island” and “Treasure Island” (yes, even back in the 1950’s there were commercial tie-ins). However, the final choice was a Tom Sawyer theme. At some point, Disney may even have considered doing a Tom Sawyerfilm.
DAVELAND DISNEYLAND MR. TOAD'S WILD RIDE PHOTOS Mr. Toad's Wild Ride. BACKSTORY (July 17, 1955—Present): Based on Disney’s adaptation of “The Wind in the Willows,” one of the two segments of “The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad.” This favorite “C” Ticket attraction is one of the most beloved dark rides in Fantasyland. DAVELAND DISNEYLAND CLOCK OF THE WORLD PHOTOS In fact, two of the earliest Disneyland postcards feature a photo of the clock. The Clock of the World was roughly fifteen feet high. Its design mimicked the look of an hourglass to reinforce that the out-of-the-ordinary looking structure was indeed a clock. Also, remember that the early publicity stated that Tomorrowland was theworld of 1986

Walt located an original bank vault, circa 1904, and had it installed inside. Guests at Disneyland could purchase special souvenir money orders with a picture of the Disneyland Branch of Bank of America. DISNEYLAND FANTASYLAND PHOTOS FANTASYLAND. There are many exciting adventures here in Fantasyland for young and old alike. Our King Arthur Carrousel is the finest of its type in the world, with 72 hand carved steeds. The themes of the four dark adventures in Fantasyland each depict one of Walt's favorite pictures in a most exciting way. DAVELAND DISNEYLAND RAILROAD PHOTOS Disneyland Railroad Main St. Station 1950's. BACKSTORY (July 17, 1955—Present): The DLRR is a narrow-gauge railroad constructed that cost $240K and each of the original four locomotives cost in excess of $40K to build/restore. Guests ride it as transportation or experience the “grand circle tour” and can remain on the trains as long asthey wish.
WALT DISNEY WORLD PHOTOS AT DAVELAND Walt Disney World. BACKSTORY (Oct. 1, 1971–Present): Largest recreational resort in the world with four theme parks. Located in Lake Buena Vista and Bay Lake, Florida, outside Orlando city limits. Walt Disney focused most of his attention on the “Florida Project” both before and after his participation at the 1964-1965 New York World's Fair, but he died on December 15, 1966, almost five DAVELAND DISNEYLAND BIG THUNDER MOUNTAIN RAILROAD PHOTOS BIG THUNDER MOUNTAIN RAILROAD. BACKSTORY (September 2, 1979—Present): This attraction replaced the Mine Train Through Nature’s Wonderland.The town you pass through at the end of the ride (Rainbow Ridge) was a part of the previous attraction, and many of the animal animatronics throughout the attraction were originally from Nature's Wonderland.. BACKSTORY: For the first Christmas at Disneyland in 1955, there was a group of 12 Dickens Carolers (from USC), under the direction of Dr. Charles C. Hirt (USC School of Music), who performed throughout the park. Hirt was a personal friend of Walt’s. Guest choirs were also invited to perform daily in the Main Street bandstand that had been recently moved to the Magnolia DAVELAND DISNEYLAND MAIN STREET U.S.A. WINDOWS DIAGRAM AND Main Street Windows. BACKSTORY: As you walk down Main Street U.S.A., you may notice that the second and third story windows contain the names of people instrumental in the creation of Disneyland.Below is an alphabetical listing of these fantastic folk who helped make the park what it is today. BACKSTORY (April 1, 1961—Present): A number of large crates were delivered to Disney in Burbank in the early 1960’s and when they were opened, 8 beautiful marble sculptures were unveiled. The sculptor was licensed by Disney in Italy to sculpt the molds for Snow White soaps and he had used the molds to create these marble sculptures, sending them as a gift. BACKSTORY: Gene Marshall is the creation of Mel Odom and was initially released in 15.5" high doll form through the Ashton-Drake Galleries, beginning in 1995.On these pages you will see photos that I have personally shot of Gene Marshall, Trent Osborn, and other “friends” from the Fashion Doll World. When South Seas Traders departed its location, Big Game Safari Shooting Gallery was one of three Disneyland shooting galleries, all operated by Mac Glashan Enterprises (founded in the 1930's by Paul MacGlashan, the company was purchased by Walt Disney Productions in 1969). BACKSTORY: Disneyland is one of my favorite theme parks to visit. Below, you will find alphabetical links that will take you to photo pages featuring vintage (that I have collected over the years) and current images (shot by yours truly) of each area of the park. DAVELAND DISNEYLAND HOTEL PHOTOS Disneyland Hotel. BACKSTORY (Oct. 5, 1955–Present): First “Disney” hotel although not Disney owned until 1988. Disneyland construction costs kept Disney from building a hotel. Disney approached a number of hotel chains in 1954, but all felt that the Disneyland venture was too risky. WALT DISNEY WORLD PHOTOS AT DAVELAND Walt Disney World. BACKSTORY (Oct. 1, 1971–Present): Largest recreational resort in the world with four theme parks. Located in Lake Buena Vista and Bay Lake, Florida, outside Orlando city limits. Walt Disney focused most of his attention on the “Florida Project” both before and after his participation at the 1964-1965 New York World's Fair, but he died on December 15, 1966, almost five DAVELAND DISNEYLAND NEW ORLEANS SQUARE PHOTOS New Orleans Square. BACKSTORY (July 24, 1966 —Present): New Orleans Square is exclusive to Disneyland, based on 19th century New Orleans. At the opening, Walt Disney made then-mayor of the real New Orleans, Victor H. Schiro, the mayor of New Orleans Square. Before New Orleans Square was built, Holidayland stood in its place. DAVELAND DISNEYLAND MR. TOAD'S WILD RIDE PHOTOS Mr. Toad's Wild Ride. BACKSTORY (July 17, 1955—Present): Based on Disney’s adaptation of “The Wind in the Willows,” one of the two segments of “The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad.” This favorite “C” Ticket attraction is one of the most beloved dark rides in Fantasyland. DAVELAND DISNEYLAND INDIANA JONES ADVENTURE PHOTOS Indiana Jones Adventure. BACKSTORY (March 3, 1995—Present): Due to the success of “Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular!” at Disney-MGM Studios in Orlando, George Lucas joined with Disney to create a new attraction with a backdrop “set in the Lost Delta of India, circa 1935.” IJA is the 3rd collaboration between WDI and Lucasfilm (Captain EO and Star Tours). DAVELAND DISNEYLAND TOM SAWYER ISLAND PHOTOS Tom Sawyer Island. BACKSTORY (JUNE 16, 1956–FEB. 5, 2007): Names originally considered for the island were “Mickey Mouse Island” and “Treasure Island” (yes, even back in the 1950’s there were commercial tie-ins). However, the final choice was a Tom Sawyer theme. At some point, Disney may even have considered doing a Tom Sawyerfilm.
DAVELAND DISNEYLAND CLOCK OF THE WORLD PHOTOS In fact, two of the earliest Disneyland postcards feature a photo of the clock. The Clock of the World was roughly fifteen feet high. Its design mimicked the look of an hourglass to reinforce that the out-of-the-ordinary looking structure was indeed a clock. Walt located an original bank vault, circa 1904, and had it installed inside. Guests at Disneyland could purchase special souvenir money orders with a picture of the Disneyland Branch of Bank of America. The time is the War of 1812the United States flag has only 15 stars. Within the gates there is a Canteen and Trading Post—stocked with pelts, guns, knives, andIndian craft.
DAVELAND DISNEYLAND OPERA HOUSE PHOTOS The show made its Disneyland debut in the Main Street Opera House on July 18, 1965. It featured an incredibly life-like Audio-Animatronic recreation of President Lincoln that recited the Gettysburg Address to amazed guests. Next door to the Opera House is the Disney Gallery. 1950's. 1960's—1990's. 2000—PRESENT. 50TH ANNIVERSARY OPENING DAY DAVELAND DISNEYLAND KING ARTHUR CARROUSEL PHOTOS King Arthur Carrousel. BACKSTORY (August 1955—Present): Disney felt every park needed a carousel (it was supposedly a carousel that Disney watched his daughter ride that inspired the park itself). Therefore, an 1875 Dentzel park model carousel which had operated since 1922 at Sunnyside Amusement Park in Toronto, Ontario was taken from Sunnyside and moved to Disneyland in 1954. DAVELAND DISNEYLAND INDIANA JONES ADVENTURE PHOTOS Indiana Jones Adventure. DAVELAND DISNEYLAND HAUNTED MANSION PHOTOS The Haunted Mansion. BACKSTORY (August 9, 1969—Present): In 1951 Disney artist Harper Goff made conceptual designs; Walt conceived it as a walk-through ghost house. 1961 handbills announced a 1963 opening.Construction began in 1962 and the exterior was completed in 1963. Despite rumors that the attraction was too scary to be opened, the truth was that it hadn’t finished being designed yet. DAVELAND DISNEYLAND MICKEY MOUSE CLUB CIRCUS PHOTOS Mickey Mouse Club Circus. BACKSTORY (Nov. 25, 1955—Sept. 7, 1956 ): Showman R. E. Anderson discussed with Walt the idea of doing a Wild West Show at Disneyland in September, 1955. Walt tweaked the idea and put a Disney spin on it by using the show as a tool to promote the upcoming Mickey Mouse Club, set to debut on October 3.
