DESIGN SYSTEM STRUCTURE This post is one in a loosely-connected series of posts about design systems and the teams that maintain them. Other installments include a framework for composing and documenting atomic systems, a conceptual view of how a design system ecosystem is maintained, and a theoretical exploration of compositional design systems. Emergency Mode “What would happen if I were struck down by a car right now?” That’s a question I ask myself on a far-too-often basis. Considering the rate of occurrence, you’d think I’d have optimized for the scenario with a card or something on myDESIGN ELITISM
In the digital realm, “design” seems to have become a catch-all term for a lot of things. That’s not an inherent problem, but the consequence of the overuse and underthinking of design has led to people—generally those lacking understanding of design—to accept it as a mythical, inaccessible process through which decisions are made, which, in any other setting, would be inappropriate. MOUTH WORDS, BRAIN WORDS Mouth Words, Brain Words. In the eternal struggle to understand how things came into being, there’s a lot of reading to be done. Reading flyers, street signs, bottle labels, book titles, names of people and places, words, paragraphs, sentences, parables, and prose—anything my eyes can settle on long enough for my brain to do something about it—be it for typographic nourishment, or, a LEARNING HOW TO WRITE Learning How To Write. It feels like it’s been quite some time since I wrote anything. That’s not the case at all, in reality. Far fromit, in fact.

The recipe you followed might have called for a particular ingredient, like yellow onions, but upon raiding your kitchen, you found you only had white onions.THE WEIRD WIDE WEB
The Weird Wide Web. From my “hotel desk” in Facebook’s New York office, I can see a handful of different environments. A cluster of soft chairs for people to sit & work situated on a grass-green carpet; a kitchen with chipboard walls and dozens of coffee samovars, empty for the third time in two hours; and a forest of white pillars bordering the desk space for this floor’s employees. PRACTICE & FEAR
Practice & Fear. There’s a fundamental flaw in the phrase “Practice makes Perfect”, particularly when it comes to the web. “Perfect” implies too much subjectivity. IT’S 2014 AND EVERYTHING IS TERRIBLE The Difficult Disconnect of the Digital Age is a first world problem if there ever was one. ------------------------- SELECTED WORK AND WRITING WHERE WE CAN GO → Today’s design and engineering tools are poorly suited for creating or working within design systems. What would our tools look like if they treated design systems as the building material, rather than an abstract thing we gesture towards?SOLSTICE →
An app for brighter days. See how much more or less daylight there is today compared to yesterday. BREAD FOR THE BUSY → A website about making bread, geared towards no-nonsense recipes. ACCESS—ABILITY → People tend to conflate “accessibility” with “disability”; but designing for accessibility is principally a question of “access”. Framed in this light, the challenges and opportunities of accessible design become more vividly obvious.
