THIS WEEK IN ROCKET HISTORY: PIONEER 10 On March 3, 1972, at 01:49 UTC, Pioneer 10 launched on top of an Atlas-Centaur SLV-3C with a Star 37E third stage, the first time this configuration had flown. After the third stage burnout, the spacecraft was traveling at 14.4 kilometers per second — at the time it was the fastest man-made object ever to leave the Earth/Moon system. DINGO REMOVAL LEADS TO A TROPHIC CASCADE OF ECOSYSTEM Those follow-on effects are a process called a trophic cascade, which in this case means fewer dingoes lead to an increase in kangaroo populations, which leads to overgrazing, which reduces vegetation and damages the quality of the soil, which causes even less vegetation, which hinders the survival of smaller animals. THE LEGACY OF NEIL ARMSTRONG The Legacy of Neil Armstrong. If there’s one man who’s become the name and face of manned space exploration, it’s Neil Armstrong. Famously, he was heard across the world, “That’s one ANTIQUE TELESCOPE IDENTIFICATION Antique Telescope Identification. Fix a strong line to the load bucket of the catapult by a breakable thread. Let the motor wind the line up around the shaft and tension the catapult, until the thread breaks and the catapult fires. CHAPEL BELL THEORIES? As most regulars here know, one part of the Apollo record seems to be somewhat mysterious, and may still be classified: the "Chapel Bell" experiment. While it appears to concern the measurement of the impact of spent Saturn IV-B stages into the Moon, no one seems to be quite sure why it was done, and especially, why it was classified. I'm starting this thread to open a forum for speculation WHERE DOES THE "6 FT OF LEAD SHIELDING" CLAIM COME FROM As part of my "The Apollo Moon Hoax: Why We Did NOT Not Go to the Moon" presentation (notice I capitalized the first "NOT" this time to avoid the confrontation from a few months ago), I'm trying to figure out where the claim of "you need 6 feet of lead shielding" to protect against Van Allen Belt Radiation comes from. I remember seeing someone actually go through the pseudo argument once, but SALTING A SKI SLOPE IN WARM WEATHER?! That was done yesterday on the Winter Olympic slalom run when the temperature reached the mid 40s. It seemed counterintuitive to me, because I use salt to hasten the thawing of icy sidewalks, but when I thought about it a bit I remembered that when salt encounters snow or ice, the resulting brine initially is far colder than the normal freezing/melting point. SPACE STATION CREW TAKES OUT THE TRASH For the ISS, Thursday, March 11, was the big garbage day. A three-ton pallet of old nickel hydrogen batteries had been hanging around, unused, on the outside of the station, and the time to finally throw them out had come. These batteries had provided the station with power, but, like all batteries, the day came when they needed to bereplaced.

SOVIET TRACKING OF APOLLO MISSIONS One bit of rebuttal of some HB claims has long been that the Soviet program would have known. There is an article in the latest issue of Novosti Kosmonavtiki which fills in some details, apparently for the first time in a public forum - if I get the time and permissions, I could post a translation on my space-history site Anyway, for readers of Russian, it's posted here.
