This Lecture Series is open to the public. These lectures are co-presented by The Cooper Union and Letterform Archive, a California non-profit public benefit corporation, incorporated in 2014, and the San Francisco Public Library, home to the and the Harrison Collection of Calligraphy and Lettering. TYPE@COOPER: TYPE WHISPERING In 6 sessions, of 3 hours each, spread over June, students dive into the practice of typedesign by looking at type and the shapes within. Through research and analysis of shapes, you will learn the language of letter forms both on a visual and on a narrative level. By sketching and drawing digitally an alphabet will be completed. Participants bring their own found type: collect lettering orTYPE@COOPER

Ken Barber, instructor, lecturer Ken Barber is a letterer, typeface designer, author, and instructor. He blames Don Martin comics, Santa Cruz skateboard graphics, and speed metal logos for TYPE@COOPER: GENERATIVE TYPOGRAPHY Lynne Yun is a NYC-based type designer and educator who specializes in typography, hand lettering, and calligraphy. She is a board member of AIGA NY and was previously a full time type designer at Monotype.During her tenure, she created custom typefaces for clients and a number of retail typefaces, including the Trade Gothic Display and Inline families. TYPE@COOPER: BRANDING FOR FOOD Through a focused exercise of restaurant branding, Douglas Riccardi will guide participants through a general approach to branding that can be applied to diverse projects and many client types. In this intensive workshop, participants will work on a project of their choice — developing a concept, analyzing competition, devising an identity and palette of brand assets, and applying these to TYPE@COOPER: FOUND LETTERING: HOW TO DISCOVER INSPIRATION Lettering artists can devise new styles and broaden creative skills, simply by observing examples found in their everyday surroundings —from neon signs and car emblems, to album covers and book jackets. This simple yet effective technique for generating new work is achieved by expanding on clues found in existing letterforms. Modular letters follow well-established methods of construction. A building-block system is employed to form the basic shapes, space them correctly, and then add optical corrections. Now over a decade ago Blaise Agüera y Arcas and Paul Needham raised a stir by asking just what did Gutenberg invent? The picture their experimental work painted was of more gradual steps towards the realization of the new technology for casting moveable type than had previously been understood, steps that seemed to show a kind of calligraphic thinking. In recent years more research has also TYPE@COOPER: THE HERSHEY FONTS In the 1960s, at Dahlgren Naval Weapons Laboratory, Dr. Allen V. Hershey worked on what was to become some of the earliest digital fonts. Hershey’s work is impressive for both technical and creative aspects, and was documented in a report called “CALLIGRAPHY FOR COMPUTERS”. Discovering this paper inspired Frank Grießhammer to resurrect Hershey’s work and bring the fonts to the age of TYPE@COOPER: HOW I BECAME A TYPE DESIGNER IN ONLY 30 YEARS Mark Simonson is an independent type designer based in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Schedule. The Condensed program meets 3 to 4 days per week for 10 weeks, from June 1 to August 5, and provides a total of 162 in-class hours. Top industry professionals lead a highly focused and comprehensive study of key typeface design principles: technique, technology, aesthetics, expression, history, and theory. Students explore the foundation of typography in depth by creating their own typefaces in hands-on classes, while developing a broad understanding of the field through lectures, discussions, and research. Electives are offered each term, focusing on topics such as pen and brush lettering, Python programming, and advanced tools for font development. A series of guest lectures round out the curriculum, allowing students deeper insight into specific relevant topics.
