COLOR ME THRIFTY
Hey there I’m Tuula, creator of Color Me Thrifty, formerly known as Thrifty Rebel Vintage. I’m super excited you found me. I’m a repurposing, reusing, redecorating, redoing, rethinking, and DIYing kinda gal who loves to share budget-friendly colorful projects for the home and garden. I hope I can inspire you to create a home thatsmiles.
REPURPOSED VINTAGE SINK PLANTERS In some of my bigger planters it’s much more cost effective, and quicker and easier, to buy a mixed hanging planter and use that rather than individual bedding plants. At our local nursery we can get 2 lovely hanging planters for $25. Sometimes plants are a little, or alot, root bound.
QUICK & EASY DIY EASTER WREATH Easter eggs. Low temp glue gun. glue sticks. Here’s my easy DIY Easter wreath hanging on my kitchen door, which is the door we use all the time. My Easter egg wreath, that I created last year, is on the other side. I looped a piece of one of the shower pouf strings around the hoop, between the green and the blue poufs, for easy hanging . HOW TO MIX YOUR OWN PAINT AND SAVE MONEY All you really need is a paint stick and some patience. The one important thing you need to remember is to only mix latex with latex , and oil with oil. Oil based and latex/water based paints do not mix and never the two should meet. I never use oil paint for anything anyway so for me that isn’t an issue. So here’s how I mixed my own DIY SCRAPBOOK PAPER STAIRS MAKEOVER About $20 for the decoupage medium, $8 for the scrapbook paper used, about $8 for the contact paper, and a few of dollars for foam brushes. That’s pretty inexpensive, and it was actually quite easy to do. Even the math part. lol. But it did take quite a bit of time. SLEIGH BED MAKEOVER AND MASTER BEDROOM PROGRESS Benjamin Moore’s Sherwood Green. It’s one of their historic colours. There are so many recipes on the internet, but I used 1 part plaster of paris, 1 part warm water, and 2 parts paint. I mixed the PofP and water really well before adding the paint, and I have to say it went on like butter. HOW TO MAKE A GARDEN ART DISH FLOWER Tape all the pieces with painters tape for about 30 minutes so they don’t move. Believe me that can happen. The first thing I do with a can of primer or paint is hammer some holes into the rim so there’s drainage back into the can. I usually do about 5 holes around half of the can. I always line my paint tray with a plastic grocery bag for easy clean up. DIY FABRIC COVERED VINYL ROLLER SHADE Then I lay the blind on the floor and measured that same distance, 60″, and marked the spot with a marker on both sides of the shade. Enter my fun and funky fabric. It has a vintage/retro vibe to me, and I fell in love with it. I thrifted two double size flat sheets a while back for $1 a piece. I just knew I would find a use for them someday. REPURPOSED LAUNDRY HAMPER PLANTER painter’s tape. spray paint. garbage can. potting soil. plant. I think it’s important to have things around us, inside and out, that are pretty and that bring us joy. And here’s my finished repurposed laundry hamper planter. This is really a quick and easy way to have some fun with flowers. I REPURPOSED VINTAGE MAGAZINE RACK PLANTER These two pretty pinky/purply mums were the perfect size for my magazine rack planter. I just put the mums in pots and all. The coco fibre acts makes a nice screen so you don’t see the pots at all. Magazine racks come in all shapes, styles, sizes, and materials and I HOW TO DISPLAY A SILVER COLLECTION I cut some steel pieces with a hack saw, which will give extra support to the shelves and small buttons will help to prop up the shelves where needed so they’re level. Just on the inside of the middle door frames are small metal supports for the glass to sit on. The steel piece sits on that and on the wooden support at the back. HOW TO MAKE A REVERSE DECOUPAGED CHANDELIER CRYSTAL It’s important to apply the MP along the outside of the paper along the faceted edges to create a good bond and seal. Again, remove any excess MP that gets on the crystal. Once the back is done and completely dry use a toothpick to poke a hole in the paper where the chandelier crystal hole is. Add any type of bail you like for hanging. HOW TO MAKE A HANGING TEACUP BIRD FEEDER Place the teacup on to the saucer. Where the teacup goes on the saucer totally depends on the shape of the teacup and how it fits onto the saucer. This ones fits nicely inside the saucer. Use painters tape to hold the teacup in place, making sure that the handle is sticking straight up. Once the teacup is where you want it, apply painters tape HOW TO MAKE CHANDELIER CRYSTAL ANGEL ORNAMENTS For the halo I decided to use a mini faux pearl beading. I put a dab of glue on the back of the head, pressed the first bead into the glue, wrapped the beading around the front, pulled it around to the back and into the glue, and cut it off. You can see the halos here. The middle angel has a pink ribbon rose, and the angel on the right has a HOW TO MAKE A TOILET TANK SKIRT It goes great with the wallpaper. First I measure the width for the 2 side pieces up to the centre toilet area, and their length from the top of the tank to the floor. Then I measure for the centre piece from the top of the tank down to the toilet. So, I need 2 side pieces that are 13″ wide by 28″ long, and aCOLOR ME THRIFTY

DECOUPAGED LAMPSHADE MAKEOVER The trick is to let the blade do the work. You don’t need any pressure at all.I. If you fold the stamps over onto the other side of the lampshade you’ll be able to see that when it’s lit up, so it’s best to cut the bits off. I finished all four sides, just sort of winging it as I went. And then I trimmed off the final corners. QUICK AND EASY FAUX MOSAIC ART Supplies used for faux mosaic art. – electrical tape. – xacto knife. – quiche pan with removable bottom. – spray paint (if wanted) This really is a quick and easy project, and could work with duct tape too or whatever kind of tape you can think of. It would be even quicker if you used tape that was already the colors that youwanted
