CHINESE PRONUNCIATION The pinyin vowel a has a rather uniform pronunciation in Chinese, very similar to the "a" sound in the English "father". (The two exceptions to this pronunciation rule are ian and üan, both covered in later sections.). The most basic syllable involving the pinyin vowel a is the sound alone, pronounced as "ah", as in the sound you make for the doctor when he examines your tonsils. CHINESE PRONUNCIATION Mandarin Chinese is a tonal language. In order to differentiate meaning, the same syllable can be pronounced with different tones. Mandarin's tones give it a very distinctive quality, but the tones can also be a source of miscommunication if not given due attention. CHINESE PRONUNCIATION Now let's look at the various final sounds we can add to j, q, and x. You'll find that with j, q, and x, the Mandarin i sound is the same as the one you learned in Section 8: the basic "ee" sound. The other sounds from that section (ia, iao, ie, iu, ian, iang, in, ing, iong) are pronounced the same as well. Listen to the sounds of this section CHARACTER MIND MAP: 日 DAY · CHINESE LESSON In Chinese, you often encounter single characters that have multiple related meanings. This has the potential to confuse learners because sometimes it is hard to make connections between component characters and their meanings within multiple-character words. BILLIARDS · CHINESE LESSON Is there a better way to mix with the locals than by shootin' some stick and throwing back some Tsingtao's? Those words that can often never get past the tip of your tongue will flow like wine by the third round of pijiu. You will need some basic billiard lingo in Mandarin Chinese to hang with the boys, however. Well, that and a solid bankshot.
GOLF · CHINESE LESSON "So, I’m on the first tee with him. I give him the driver. He hauls off and whacks one - big hitter, the Lama " If Carl the grounds-keeper can make it down to China to play a round of golf, so can you. But you'll need the lingo, and that is where we come in. After this lesson, you'll be equipped to tell one of your three caddies when you want the driver or the iron, in Mandarin. DON'T YOU NEED TO SLEEP? · CHINESE LESSON In this lesson, Joe and Lyn will talk about those little fights you might have with people that are close to you. Let's check it out! INTERVIEW WITH THE BOSS · CHINESE LESSON Interview with the Boss. The clammy handshake the subsequent perspiring flush of sweat, the blank mind run through the wringer as the suit across the desk shoots out a machine-gun-like barrage of blank-drawing interrogations. NATURAL LEARNING
We believe that our dynamic conversations give you the opportunity to naturally acquire the language. NATIVE PRONUNCIATION Tones are important, and lessons in our Say It Right (S.I.R.) series focus on just that. Master one of the most daunting aspects of the language with 22 lessons dedicated to pinyin tones, tricky combinations, and difficult sounds.DIALOGUE
The Dialogue section provides an interactive transcript of the lesson. The Chinese characters are provided along with the English translation and pinyin to ease with pronunciation. It’s better to learn the target language in context but we provide a function to study each word separately too. Scrutinize each Chinese character by mousing over it to see the literal translation. You also have the option of toggling between Simplified and Traditional characters.VOCABULARY
Rote memorization is boring and not the most effective method, but we suggest using the supplementary vocabulary lists in conjunction with the audio or video to accelerate your rate of achieving languagecompetency.
EXPANSION
Our expansion gives you the opportunity to learn target vocabulary taught in the lesson in other meaningful situations.EXERCISES
