10 THINGS I'VE LEARNED LIVING IN BRUSSELS, BELGIUM Lesson learnt: forget any important document you’ve accumulated at any point – since the dawn of time – passport, rental agreement, Tesco clubcard, swimming certificates – at your DOOM.. 3. Belgian beer and bar snacks are a triumph of simplicity over fussiness. But after a dispiriting onslaught of civil administration there’s always the beer, the bar snacks and the realisation that a SLOW TRAVELLING EASTERN EUROPE BY MOTORHOME The following year we spent longer in the east, crossing from Greece into Bulgaria, through into Romania, Ukraine and Poland before finding safe haven back in Germany. This was the section of travel which really revealed the east of Europe to us. Before we left Greece, advice rolled in to be careful. VISITING THE FORT DE LONCIN WWI MEMORIAL SITE, IN LIEGE The ruined Fort de Loncin, in Ans, in the province of Liège, Belgium, is a powerful memorial to Belgian bravery and the destruction of World War 1.. At 0530 on August 15 th, 1914, after three days of siege, a shell from a German gun scored a direct hit on an ammunition magazine at Fort de Loncin, detonating 12 tons of explosives.The resulting blast destroyed the heart of the fort and killed TOP 10 WAR MEMORIALS FOR CANADIANS IN EUROPE The Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial is the largest of 5 memorials dedicated to Newfoundlanders, in Europe, and commemorates the lives of 814 Newfoundlanders who died during the First World War with no known grave. The memorial consists of a bronze statue of a caribou, the emblem of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment, standing on a mound, proudly overlooking the trenches, and 10 MOST BEAUTIFUL TOWNS & VILLAGES OF PIEDMONT, ITALY 10. Saluzzo. Head to the town of Saluzzo, another beautiful place in Piedmont, Italy. Saluzzo, a near-perfect example of a classic 14 th -century hill village, is home to a small castle and several palazzos. In fact, the town is the setting of The Clerk’s Tale, one of Chaucer’s stories in The Canterbury Tales. VISITING ALDEN BIESEN CASTLE AND GARDENS IN LIMBURG Alden Biesen Castle ’s history dates back to the 11 th century, although the current buildings are from the 16 th century. The castle was one of 12 headquarters of the Teutonic Order of knights and was the showpiece of the region. Its strategic location near the Maas and Rhine rivers gave it vital status from the 16 th to 18 th centuries. BIKE SHARING IN BELGIUM Once signed up, you can rent a bike from any of the 44 stations open all around Belgium. For every bike hire, you will pay a maximum 3€ for 24 hours. I say “maximum”, because this is the standard fee. In a growing number of cities, however, a deal has been signed with the authorities to subsidize the bike hire cost. 4 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT WORKING IN BELGIUM BELGIUM'S TOP TEN SPRING SIGHTS FOR GARDEN AND NATURE One of the most anticipated spring garden events in Brussels is the opening of the Royal Greenhouses at the Palace in Laeken Belgium.
