CCPI Ranking 2021.
CCPI COUNTRIES AND RANKINGS: CANADA Canada. Ranked among the worst-performing countries in CCPI 2020, Canada fell another three spots in this year’s index, to 58th. Canada’s per capita GHG emissions and per capita energy use are among the world’s highest, leading to a very low rating in the GHG Emissions and Energy Use categories. The renewable energies grew alsoonly by 4%
COUNTRIES | CLIMATE CHANGE PERFORMANCE INDEX G20 performance: Only Mexico, Brazil, Indonesia, India and Germany out of the G20 are rated high for their performance in the Energy Use category. Mexico is among the few countries in this year’s CCPI that are rated very high for the well-below-2°C compatibility of their 2030 energy use target. CLIMATE CHANGE PERFORMANCE INDEX 2021 The annual Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI), published since 2005, is an independent monitoring tool for tracking the climate protection performance of 57 countries and the EU. The CCPI aims to enhance transparency in international climate politics and it enables comparison of individual countries’ climate protection efforts andprogress.
CCPI PHILOSOPHY & TEAM The Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI), published annually since 2005, is an independent monitoring tool for tracking countries’ climate protection performance. The United States’ performance on this year’s CCPI ranks very low, putting it in the lowest rank. This is driven by its withdrawal from the Paris Agreement and lack of targets at the national level to either reduce national GHG emissionsor
CCPI COUNTRIES AND RANKINGS: IRELAND Ireland. While Ireland moves up two places in the rankings, to 39th, the country remains in the low performance category overall in this year’s CCPI. Ireland remains stable in the Renewable Energy category, showing high performance, and in the Energy Use category, with a medium rating. The country, however, ranks very low in GHGEmissions.
CCPI COUNTRIES AND RANKINGS: MOROCCO Morocco. Morocco falls one place to 7th, but remains in the top 10 of this year’s CCPI and among the high-performing countries. As in previous years, Morocco scores high in all categories except for Renewable Energy, where it rises three spots but maintains its medium ranking. CLIMATE CHANGE PERFORMANCE INDEX Methodology. The CCPI evaluates 57 countries and the European Union, which together generate 90%+ of global greenhouse gas emissions. Using standardised criteria, the CCPI looks at four categories, with 14 indicators: Greenhouse Gas Emissions (40% of the overall score), Renewable Energy (20%), Energy Use (20%), and Climate Policy (20%). EU_The EU is up six places, shifting it from an overall medium to a high rating. The EU boosted its rating in the climate policy section. This owes to ratification of the Green Deal, a large-scale policy aiming for net-zero GHG emissions by 2050, establishment of a circular economy, and upholding biodiversity preservation._ United States_For the second straight year, the United States ranks dead last. The continued politics of climate change denial under the Trump administration, punctuated by withdrawal from the Paris Agreement, keep the US at low or very low in all categories. The situation should improve if President-elect Biden fulfils his promises and puts the climate crisis back on the agenda._ > COUNTRIES WITH HIGH RANKINGS HAVE NO REASON TO SIT BACK AND RELAX. No country performs well enough in all CCPI index categories to achieve an overall very high rating. The first three positions in the overall ranking therefore remain empty. This says a great deal. Even if all countries were as committed as the current frontrunners, it would still not be enough to prevent dangerous climate change. The countries with high rankings also have no reason to ease up. Even greater efforts and actions by governments are needed to set the world on track to keep global warming well below a 2°C increase. Evenbetter, 1.5°C.
The climate crisis is an existential threat to life on Earth. To reduce the magnitude of the crisis’ impacts, we must limit global warming to 1.5°C, as decided in the Paris Agreement. Only decisive action will reduce greenhouse gas emissions, which are responsible for climate change. AS AN INDEPENDENT MONITORING TOOL, THE CCPI HAS A LEADING ROLE IN INFORMING ON THE PARIS AGREEMENT’S IMPLEMENTATIONPHASE.
SINCE 2005, THE CCPI HAS PROVIDED ANALYSIS OF COUNTRIES’ CLIMATE PROTECTION PERFORMANCE. It creates transparency in climate policy, makes it possible to compare climate protection efforts, and lets you see progress and setbacks.METHODOLOGY
The CCPI’s unique climate policy section evaluates countries’ progress in implementing policies working towards achieving the ParisAgreement goals.
