CENTRESCIENCE
The Coalition works on eleven initiatives that were identified as priority areas with the greatest potential for fast action to reduce climate change impacts. These partner-led initiatives provide strategic guidance in both specific and cross cutting sectors. Go toInitiatives.
SHORT-LIVED CLIMATE POLLUTANTS (SLCPS) Short-lived climate pollutants are powerful climate forcers that remain in the atmosphere for a much shorter period of time than carbon dioxide (CO 2), yet their potential to warm the atmosphere can be many times greater.Certain short-lived climate pollutants are also dangerous air pollutants that have harmful effects for people, ecosystems and agricultural productivity. OPEN AGRICULTURAL BURNING The environmental and human costs of agricultural open burning far outweigh the near-term economic benefits for farmers. Responsible for more than a third of all black carbon emissions, open burning is the single largest source of black carbon, a short-lived climate pollutant that contributes to air pollution, climate change, and increased melting in the cryosphere (regions of snow and ice).BLACK CARBON
Black carbon is an important contributor to warming because it is very effective at absorbing light and heating its surroundings. Per unit of mass, black carbon has a warming impact on climate that is 460-1,500 times stronger than CO 2.. When suspended in the atmosphere, black carbon contributes to warming by converting incoming solar radiationto heat.
THE CCAC OIL & GAS METHANE PARTNERSHIP The Climate and Clean Air Coalition created a voluntary initiative to help companies reduce methane emissions in the oil and gas sector. The Oil & Gas Methane Partnership was launched at the UN Secretary General’s Climate Summit in New York in September 2014. SOLID WASTE EMISSIONS ESTIMATION TOOL (SWEET) VERSION 3.1 The Solid Waste Emissions Estimation Tool (SWEET) is an Excel-based tool that quantifies emissions of methane, black carbon, and other pollutants from sources in the municipal solid waste sector. The tool provides emissions and emissions reduction estimates at the project-, source-, and municipality-level. HYDROFLUOROCARBONS (HFCS) Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) are a group of industrial chemicals primarily used for cooling and refrigeration. HFCs were developed to replace stratospheric ozone-depleting substances that are currently being phased out under the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. Many HFCs are very powerful greenhouse gasesand a
GLOBAL ASSESSMENT: URGENT STEPS MUST BE TAKEN TO REDUCE A Global Methane Assessment released today by the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) shows that human-caused methane emissions can be reduced by up to 45 per cent this decade. Such reductions would avoid nearly 0.3°C of global warming by 2045 and would be consistent with keeping the Paris Climate Agreement’s goal to CHILE TAKES ACTION ON AIR POLLUTION Every year in Chile, air pollution costs the health sector at least $670 million and is the root cause of the 127,000 emergency health consultations and more than 4,000 premature deaths. To address this challenge, in 2014, the Government launched a programme in the centre-south region to replace 200,000 firewood heaters with more energy-efficient heaters such as new gas, paraffin or wood COLLECTION OF MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE IN DEVELOPING 2010. TEMPERATURE PATHWAY CALCULATOR The Pathway Calculator is a key component of the Coalition’s Multiple Benefits Pathway Framework, which helps countries and regions analyze the climate and clean air benefits of greenhouse gas and air pollution mitigation strategies and track their impacts over multiple time scales.. The Temperature Pathway Calculator is an easy-to-use tool for determining temperature impacts of mitigationTROPOSPHERIC OZONE
Ozone (O 3) is a reactive gas that exists in two layers of the atmosphere: the stratosphere (upper layer) and the troposphere (at ground level and up to 15km).In the stratosphere, ozone protects life on Earth from the sun’s ultraviolet radiation. In contrast, at lower levels, it is an important greenhouse gas and air pollutant, which is harmful to human and ecosystem health.NGO ENGAGEMENT
Levels of engagement. We encourage you to spread the work about short-lived climate pollutants and theCoalition's
CLIMATE AND CLEAN AIR COALITION TRUST FUND The Coalition's Trust Fund will be used to build capacity, enable peer-to-peer engagement and support leadership at the national level with the of achieving positive outcomes for health, food security, livelihoods and the environment. This will be achieved by leveraging our approach that integrates air quality and climate mitigation.CCAC WORKING GROUP
