Errollyn Wallen (b.1958) Henry Purcell (1659–1695) A new opera incorporating Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas Buxton International Festival co-commissioned production in partnership with the Barbican Centre, Mahogany Opera, Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra & Chorale, Edinburgh International Festival and Dunedin Consort. The story of Dido and Aeneas did not end with Dido’s death. This new opera byTHE ENGLISH CONCERT
The English Concert is an outstanding orchestra: exceptional, in the world-renowned quality, ambition and variety of its live and recorded output; unique, in the zeal of its players for working and performing together; unwavering, in its desire to connect with its audience throughout the world. A welcome return from 2019, their programme for FOUR BEAUTIFUL BUXTON WALKS An offshoot of The Ring of Trees route, the steep climb to Solomon’s Temple is a popular Buxton walk. The folly was built in 1896 to replace an earlier construction commissioned by local landowner Solomon Mycock and sits on top of a Bronze Age barrow. The views from the top are spectacular and you can see for 15 miles (24 km) on a goodday.
THE BIF OPERA SERIES 2021 A full festival will go ahead between the 8 and 25 July with the following opera series: Dido’s Ghost Errollyn Wallen (b. 1958), libretto by Wesley Stace A co-commissioned production in partnership with the Barbican Centre, Mahogany Opera, Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra & Chorale, and Dunedin Consort. Venue: Buxton Opera House Dates & Times: Sunday 11 FRIENDS - BUXTON INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL Since we began in 1970, our members have donated over 2 million pounds towards the Festival. Our subscriptions go on everything from supporting entire operas to engaging top-class musicians and speakers, to supporting the Festival Chorus and Young Artists Programme. The generosity of our members is fundamental to BIF’s growth andsuccess, and
SIR JOHN TOMLINSON AND ROZANNA MADYLUS It is a role destined to crown Sir John’s glorious career. This collaboration with the acclaimed ensemble Counterpoise also features Rozannna Madylus in the parts of the Fool, Cordelia and her sisters. She is the soloist too in Brünnhilde’s Dream, a sequence of music imagining the state of mind of Wotan’s favourite Valkyrie daughteras

At nine o’clock one Wednesday morning in July 2019, I walked out on the stage of the Pavilion Arts Centre in Buxton. The little audience that we had managed to. A SIR JOHN TOMLINSON AND ROZANNA MADYLUS It is a role destined to crown Sir John’s glorious career.
