The Building Congress has since grown to more than 550 member organizations and is more relevant today than at any other point in our history. LABOR SHORTAGE COMING IN SKILLED TRADES Union construction workers earned, on average, $7 an hour, or 40 percent more, than their non-union counterparts, with union wages of $23.95 an hour versus $16.84 an hour for non-union workers, according to a 2017 report from the Economic Policy Institute. The city’s subway system was a fraction of what it is today, the Empire State Building was a decade away from breaking ground and the building industry was fragmented by trade.
