Buffalo Bayou Park is the 160-acre greenspace that lies just west of downtown Houston. Enhancement of the park was a collaboration of BBP, the Kinder Foundation, the City of Houston through Houston Parks & Recreation Department and Harris County Flood Control District. BUFFALO BAYOU PARK CISTERN About the Cistern. The Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern is a former drinking water reservoir built in 1926 for the City of Houston. As one of the city’s early underground reservoirs, it supported the municipal water system’s goals of fire suppression (water pressure) and drinking water storage. HIKE AND BIKE TRAILS CLEAN & GREEN PROGRAM Clean & Green Program. The Houston area storm water drainage system directs street water and debris into curb catch basins that route the runoff through an underground system that empties into the city’s bayous. Discarded soda cans, plastic bags, Styrofoam cups and other pieces of floating litter from the streets enter into the drainagesystem.
THE WATER WORKS IN BUFFALO BAYOU PARK The Water Works in Buffalo Bayou Park is the perfect venue for a cocktail reception, birthday party, wedding or large-scale event. Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern. The Cistern was one of the City of Houston’s first underground drinking-water reservoirs. Built in 1926, it provided decades of service until it was decommissioned in 2007 due to an irreparable leak. The 87,500-square-foot expanse includes 25-foot tall concrete columns set row upon row, hovering over two inches of water on the reservoir’s floor.
