GRATWICKS IN BUFFALO See Gratwick Memorial, Forest Lawn Cemetery. In the late 1870s, 414 Delaware Avenue became the residence of lumber baron William H. Gratwick who did not stay long there. In the early '80s he hired architect H. H. Richardson to design a more spectacular mansion at 776 Delaware. (Source: Buffalo's Delaware Avenue: Mansions and Families, by Edward T. Dunn. Beer, Wines, and Liquors, at Washington St. in Buffalo were importers and wholesale dealers in foreign and native wines and liquors.Office and stores were located at 297, 299 and 301 Washington St. The firm started in 1848 as Gillig and Bernhardt.In 1886 it became Bernhardt Bros. after the retirement of Gillig. BUFFALO’S FILM ROW Buffalo’s association with the history the American film industry began in 1896 when Thomas Edison demonstrated his latest invention, the Vitascope, at the Buffalo Public Library (Biddle 2013). The Vitascope was the first commercially-successful celluloid motion picture projector in the country. In less than six months of Vitascope’s debut in Buffalo, Mitchell H. Mark opened the first BIOS - KNOX FAMILY OF BUFFALO Seymour Horace Knox. Of Scots-Irish ancestry, Seymour Horace Knox was born in 1861 in Russell, Saint Lawrence County, New York, the son of James Horace Knox, a farmer, and his wife, the former Jane E. McBrier.James' grandfather had fought in the Revolution. The first of these Knoxes in America, William, came to Massachusetts from Belfastin 1737.
