WHAT IS COMMUNICATIVE COMPETENCE?SOCIAL ROUTINES
Social routines can last from a few seconds (e.g., a short greeting routine) to a half-hour or more (e.g., a routine for participation in a language arts lesson with 3-4 student communication scripts within the routine). Bridge School staff create unique social routines for individual students and for groups to help them learn to use new modes WHAT IS AN AAC SYSTEM? An AAC system is comprised of communication support technologies, as well as strategies that make conversations flow more smoothly and help each partner in the interaction remain actively engaged. The goal of an AAC system is to support authentic interactions. Therefore, the development of AAC systems must also address each interactant’s COMMUNICATIVE COMPETENCE SKILL AREAS AAC SYSTEM DESIGN: GUIDING PRINCIPLES AAC System design should keep parity in mind. “Communicative parity” is the balance in turns taken between partners during an interaction. ACTIVITY 1: HOW I SEE MYSELF; HOW I SEE YOU Mentors complete the worksheet ahead of time and share their responses with the mentees as a way to model the process and give more tangible examples.
