THE WINNERS OF THE 2021 AFRICAN BEER CUP The winners of the 2021 African Beer Cup were announced at a ceremony held at Ukhamba Beerworx on June 5. WINNERS OF THE 2020 BREWMISTRESS SOUTH AFRICAN BEER AWARDS As always, dozens and dozens of beers received votes here and the top three was very tight indeed. The top three really represented a fine mix of a long-established national brewery, a very new contract brand and a small-town brewpub. WINNER: Jack CRAFT BEER IN THE NORTHERN CAPE The Ox, as it is known, has the best selection of craft beer in the province, though of course most of it comes from Gauteng and the Western Cape. Just check any dates on the labels before you commit – the beers are not cheap and some have been waiting a while to be opened. Diamond’s beer will soon be available here as well. BREWING BEYOND THE BASICS: A BREWING COURSE IN CAPE TOWN Join us for a three-day brewing course in Cape Town. Brewing Beyond the Basics covers every step of the brewing process, starting with an in-depth look at each of the ingredients. Guest speakers from local breweries explain how to get the most from your malt, hops, water and yeast. Day one ends with an introduction to the BJCP, including a BREWING BEYOND THE BASICS: A BREWING COURSE IN CAPE TOWN Brewing Beyond the Basics covers every step of the brewing process, starting with an in-depth look at each of the four main ingredients. topics covered include how to alter your water, using filters and monitoring pH; choosing the right malt for the style, base malts vs speciality and the use of adjuncts in place of malt; yeast – what itdoes
BEER REVIEW: CHIBUKU SHAKE-SHAKE It was on a recent trip to Botswana that I tasted traditional sorghum beer for the first time in a long time. Known there as Chibuku, or more commonly as Shake-Shake (you need to shake the carton before opening), it’s fairly easy to find and my hosts at Big Sip Co. had a carton ready for me when I arrived. I am always thrilled to taste CRAFT BEER NEWS FROM THE EASTERN CAPE We hear a lot about what’s going on in the Western Cape, Gauteng and KZN, beer-wise, but there’s not generally much news coming out ofthe Eastern Cape.
