Background In 1849 St. Louis, Missouri was a booming city of some 63,000, benefitting from its role as a major Mississippi River port and as the last major city where settlers and gold seekers could resupply before heading further west. A LANDMARK 1826 MAP NEW ENGLAND A most important 1826 map of New England by Nathan Hale, being the first significant large-scale map of New England issued in the 19 th century. Playing cards are difficult to produce, requiring special paper and coatings as well as a capacity for color printing, and their manufacture came late to America and probably did not begin until after the Revolution.
