WINTER FLY-FISHING IN THE NORTH ISLAND OF NEW ZEALAND The good news is that much of the Lake Taupo area, on the Central North Island Plateau is open over Winter (May through August), and it is the time Rainbow and brown trout head up the rivers and streams (all 47 of them that flow into Lake Taupo) to spawn.THE BOOBY FLY
One of the strangest looking but most productive flies you can use in still or very slow moving waters. There are no prizes for guessing how the fly got its name, once you see the fly, and also no prizes for those who think that these flies are sometimes called "DollyParton’s".
KILL A TROUT QUICKLY TO GET THE BEST RESULT ON THE TABLE Kill Me Quick. If you decide to kill a fish - kill it quickly - as soon as you land it. A solid belt above the eyes with a 'priest', heavy rock, or solid stick will do this job well. DO TEN FOOT FLY RODS MAKE YOU A BETTER ANGLER? Do 10 Foot Light-Line Fly-rods Make You a Better Angler? Most fishermen have a few pet theories about what catches trout and what does not. One of my theories, some call it an obsession, is that it is not what you fish with, but where you fish, that is the prime factor in determining fishing success or failure. 'Reading the water' to find trout is essential if you want to become a good or better angler. If you are looking for really big yellowtail kingfish, Winter is a great time. Anywhere from Whakatane and out to White Island and even further afield, up around the Coromandel and Great Barrier, into the Hauraki Gulf, up past the Hen and Chicks Islands and on into the winterless North, of New Zealand, kingfish are waiting.THE BOOBY FLY
One of the strangest looking but most productive flies you can use in still or very slow moving waters. There are no prizes for guessing how the fly got its name, once you see the fly, and also no prizes for those who think that these flies are sometimes called "DollyParton’s".
HOW TO KEEP FRESH CAUGHT FISH FRESH By the time our intrepid crew get back to the bach, crib, campsite or home, the fish is a smelly, slimy mess. Cleaning and preparing the fish to cook is a long slow job – the soggy, flabby-fleshed bundles of slime are hard to handle. HOW TO RELEASE FISH WITH THE BEST CHANCES OF SURVIVAL If you must lift a fish in your hands, hold the fish under the gill latch in one hand, and just in front of the tail with the other. Never, ever, not even once, lift a fish out of the water by holdingthe belly area.
HOW TO ANCHOR IN THE RIGHT POSITION TO CATCH MORE FISH What you need to know about fishing hooks. Why so many hook types, sizes, and shapes? You wander into the tackle shop to buy some hooks, and there in front of you is a huge array of sizes and variations. HOW TO CATCH KAHAWAI, A TOP NEW ZEALAND SPORTFISH, PART 2 Kahawai love lures and this method can be the best way of catching them. There is an added bonus. Kahawai caught on light tackle are one of the best sportfish in the ocean. FISHING WEED BEDS IN LAKES FOR TROUT; PART 1 Fishing Weed Beds in Lakes - Part 1 Weed beds are a veritable hothouse for trout food production. The numbers of little beasties that lurk in and around weed beds make for a trout’s smorgasbord. HOW TO USE WET FLIES EFFECTIVELY TO CATCH MORE TROUT Swinging Wet Flies or Nymphs on Streams and Small Rivers Fishing wet flies is one of my favourite forms of fly fishing - in the right water. When ‘traditional’ dry fly or nymphing is just not getting the job done, swinging a wet fly or nymph through likely water oftengets results.
HOW TO REMOVE A HOOK FROM A HUMAN PAINLESSLY AND SAFELY If you are using small hooks, smaller than 4/0, (hook sizes) you can use a pair of long-nose pliers, or forceps.Push down on the eye of the hook, as above. Grab the hook at the top of the bend, with the foceps at right-angles to the hook shaft, and then quickly and firmly rotate your wrist, and the forceps, towards the eye of the hook. These hooks are designed to provide as much strength as a hook one or two sizes up, but where a smaller hook is required. OK, so back to longer casts with a 10'foot rod. The casting gurus will tell us that the longer the arc the rod tip moves through, the longer the cast. So a 10' rod has the potential to cast further than a 9' rod. In the diagram here-about, you can see that if you stop a 10' rod at the same place as a 9' foot rod the 10' rod tip will move further. HOW TO CATCH KAHAWAI, A TOP NEW ZEALAND SPORTFISH, PART 2 Kahawai will take just about any lure, as long as it is the right size, when fished on light spinning tackle. Standard metal jigs will work, as will soft-plastic baits. A ‘yo-yo’ retrieve is good. Cast out and let the lure sink. Wind in for three or four turns of the reel handle, and lift the rod tip as you do so. KILL A TROUT QUICKLY TO GET THE BEST RESULT ON THE TABLE Fillet the trout leaving the skin on. Cut the fillets up into serving size pieces. With a pair of scissors cut few 5mm (1/2") nicks in the edge of the skin to prevent the fillets 'curling'. Cover the bottom of a fry pan with sea-salt (and only sea-salt will do) to 2 or 3mm andheat to
HOW TO ANCHOR IN THE RIGHT POSITION TO CATCH MORE FISH Two main factors have to be taken into account: current and wind direction. Once you have a marker in position motor up past the marker at least a far as the water is deep, doubled. For example if the water is 20 meters deep, motor up-current and upwind for 60 meters and let the boat drift. If you hit the marker--go back and anchor. TROUT FISHING MENTORS & REVELATIONS Trout Fishing Mentors & Revelations - Part 2 “Feesh iz ver you find zem” I have seen the Tongariro River (central North Island, NZ) change within hours from a clear river to a cocoa-coloured torrent, pushing pumice, logs and assorted rubbish at flank speed down-river. Grab the hook at the top of the bend, with the foceps at right-angles to the hook shaft, and then quickly and firmly rotate your wrist, and the forceps, towards the eye of the hook. WHAT DOES A 'FLY-ROD'S ACTION' MEAN The casting action of the rod is the prime function, and should be seen as being way more important in freshwater trout fishing than its ability to help land fish. The reason is simple, when fly-fishing you do a great deal more casting than you do fighting a fish. There is a HOW TO KEEP FRESH CAUGHT FISH FRESH By the time our intrepid crew get back to the bach, crib, campsite or home, the fish is a smelly, slimy mess. Cleaning and preparing the fish to cook is a long slow job – the soggy, flabby-fleshed bundles of slime are hard to handle. HOW TO USE WET FLIES EFFECTIVELY TO CATCH MORE TROUT Hack the wings off, or leave a stub of the wing, and use like any wet fly. Or soak a dry fly in leader-sink and again fish it like any wet fly. Sometimes ‘drowning’ a terrestrial fly like a hopper, beetle, moth or cicada will do the trick. This can be especially effective when you know, or suspect, that trout are feeding on small Emergers.
