CALAVERAS BIG TREES HISTORY COMES TO LIFE The interview was the beginning of CBTA’s History Project, an idea suggested by Rod Smith, president of CBTA. Earl Walsh was born on December 31, 1919 and is now 99 years old. He tells stories of living through the depression, helping Elizabeth Whiteside at the Big Trees Hotel and later, becoming a bombardier pilot during WW2 and the KoreanWar.

PIONEER CABIN TREE FALLS The Pioneer Cabin Tree is one of the best known giant sequoias, which grow naturally only in a few locations on the western slope of the Sierra Nevada. The giant sequoia is the largest tree species in the world, with some trees reaching a diameter of 27 feet. The Pioneer Cabin Tree stood approximately 100 feet tall and was 22 feet indiameter

Come on up to the park, and you’ll find me along the North Grove trail. I don’t know why giant sequoias get all the glory here at the park, because I’m far flashier and four-seasons showy! I create dazzling white blooms in April and May, then wrap myself in lovely green all summer. In the fall, my leaves glow a spectacular red and pink, and my vibrant red berries attract winter birds. The big flower show has begun, so let me explain. My fancy white petals areactually bracts
