IS PSYCHIATRY DANGEROUS? On August 26, Shayla Love, senior staff writer, published a piece on VICE, an online magazine. The article is titled The Movement Against Psychiatry: The contentious debate of whether to fix—or completely overthrow—the way we treat mental illness.. In her article, Ms. Love provides abundant quotes from people on both sides of the issue, including Awais Aftab, MD, an American psychiatrist TORTURE AT LAKE ALICE “HOSPITAL”, NEW ZEALAND Torture at Lake Alice “Hospital”, New Zealand. According to Wikipedia, Lake Alice Hospital was a rural psychiatric facility in Lake Alice, Manawatū,-Whanganui, New Zealand. BIPOLAR DISORDER IS NOT AN ILLNESS And bear in mind that these are not relatively trivial, incidental aspects of the so-called illness. These are the defining features. The very essence of bipolar disorder – according to DSM – is an episode of profound happiness or an episode of profound grumpiness and irritability. This is indeed a ADHD: THE HOAX UNRAVELS ADHD: The Hoax Unravels. At the risk of stating the obvious, ADHD is not an illness. Rather, it is an unreliable and disempowering label for a loose collection of arbitrarily chosen and vaguely defined behaviors. ADHD has been avidly promoted as an illness by pharma-psychiatry for the purpose of HOMOSEXUALITY: THE MENTAL ILLNESS THAT WENT AWAY According to the American Psychiatric Association, until 1974 homosexuality was a mental illness. Freud had alluded to homosexuality numerous times in his writings, and had concluded that paranoia and homosexuality were inseparable. Other psychiatrists wrote copiously on the subject, and homosexuality was “treated” on a wide basis. DEPRESSION IS NOT AN ILLNESS: IT IS AN ADAPTIVE MECHANISM Contrary to the APA’s assertion, depression is not an illness. In fact, depression is an adaptive mechanism which has served humanity well for millions of years. When things are going well in our lives, we feel good. This good feeling is nature’s way of telling us to keep doing what we’re doing. DSM-5 INTER-RATER RELIABILITY IS LOW DSM-5 Inter-Rater Reliability is Low. There’s an article by Jack Carney, DSW, on this topic on Mad in America. Jack refers to the DSM-5 field trials published earlier this year in the American Journal of Psychiatry. Inter-rater reliability is measured by a statistic called a kappa score. A score of 1 means perfect inter-rater agreement; a THE BIOLOGICAL EVIDENCE FOR “MENTAL ILLNESS” The Biological Evidence for “Mental Illness”. On January 2, 2017, I published a short post titled Carrie Fisher Dead at Age 60 on Behaviorism and Mental Health. The article was published simultaneously on Mad in America. On January 4, a response from Carolina Partners was entered into the comments string on both sites. DEPRESSION IS NOT AN ILLNESS: IT IS AN ADAPTIVE MECHANISM Contrary to the APA’s assertion, depression is not an illness. Nevertheless, Dr. Frances assures us that: “It’s a great mistake to confuse bad behavior with mental ADHD: THE HOAX UNRAVELS ADHD: The Hoax Unravels. At the risk of stating the obvious, ADHD is not an illness. Rather, it is an unreliable and disempowering label for a loose collection of arbitrarily chosen and vaguely defined behaviors. ADHD has been avidly promoted as an illness by pharma-psychiatry for the purpose of INVOLUNTARY MENTAL HEALTH COMMITMENTS The phrase "mental health" as used in the name of this website is simply a term of convenience. It specifically does not imply that the human problems embraced by this term are illnesses, or that their absence constitutes health. Indeed, the fundamental tenet of this site is that there are no mental illnesses, and that conceptualizing human problems in this way is spurious, destructive DEPRESSION VS. NORMAL UNHAPPINESS The much more reasonable position is that depression is depression is depression! It admits of degrees, of course, but there’s not the slightest evidence that severe depression is a different kind of entity from moderate or mild depression. In science, the burden of proof lies with the party making the extreme claim. A PSYCHIATRIC CASE STUDY. A SAD STORY The author is Steven Dilsaver, MD, and the piece is dated October 11, 2013. The article is a case study of the psychiatric “treatment” of an eight-year-old boy (John). John was brought to an outpatient clinic because of “highly aggressive destructive behavior and sleeping problems.”. It was noted that his “parents had been ANTIDEPRESSANTS AND LIVER FAILURE Last month (December 2013) the American Journal of Psychiatry published Antidepressant-Induced Liver Injury: A Review for Clinicians, by Voican C.S. et PSYCHIATRY IS INTRINSICALLY FLAWED AND ROTTEN And all of this, in my view, is flawed and rotten. Psychiatrists bought this spurious rubbish and became the shills of the pharmaceutical industry because it suited their purpose.
