HOW TO VOLUNTEER
1. The best way to help would be to go the USPS website, USPSoperationsanta.com, but before you do that, read this page and the tips it offers. First, if you don’t see enough “needy” letters at the USPS ® site, it means Christmas volunteers are quickly adopting the ones asking for basic necessities; as they get adopted, letters are taken down from the site. Help answer sad letters to Santa written by children who need a brighter Christmas You can adopt real letters to Santa written by underprivileged kids and send your gifts directly to the children who wrote to him. There’s no middle man or charity; it’s micro-philanthropy, direct from you to a child when you give in this way. Every December since 1912, the US Postal Service ® has permitted the public to read and adopt children’s letters to Santa. Many are written by kids and Moms who ask only for “a warm coat for my daughter,” “new shoes, size 6,” or other basic necessities. Volunteers at Christmas may mail their gifts directly to the child or family who needs a brighter Christmas. On December 4, 2020 the USPS ® launched a new website making the letters to Santa available for adoption from anywhere in the US. After selecting letters for posting at the site, the elves at the USPS send every letter on to Santa so he can deliver his gifts on Christmas, too.
Some volunteers feel alone and sad over the holidays, and find comfort and inspiration being part of this. Others have families and bring their kids to teach them the meaning of Christmas. Volunteers can print out letters they adopt from the USPS website, along with an encoded address label to go with each letter, required when they mail their packages. To protect children’s privacy, USPS staff black out family names and addresses from letters before posting them online. Volunteers who adopt letters may mail their gifts using the encoded labels at any of 19,000 postal branches nationwide that offer “label scanning”. See our Locations page to find one. Gifts must be mailed by December 20th in order to be delivered by Christmas. Be An Elf adopts letters from families, but _only_ through the USPS ® website. The number of letters we adopt increases as we receive donations from the public. To be clear, we do _not_ adopt emails sent using the contact form at this site; if you are a family seeking gifts, please see our Seeking Gifts?page.
Every year we do adopt letters through the USPS website. Many ask for new shoes, clothes, and other basic needs. They are often written by sad parents who explain they are struggling financially and that their children are too young to write. Depending on how much we raise, Be An Elf’s goal is to send each mom a Target gift card for $100. Our donors get a tax deduction, and we have faith that the Moms know best what their kids most want and need. We tuck the Target gift card into a Christmas card with a note saying simply, “This is for your kids. Love, Santa.” Gifts may be made to Be An Elf using our Donate Now page, also at the top left of this page. Our mailing address appears near the top of that page in case you prefer to give by check. Your tax-deductible gift to Be An Elf will help us send more gifts to low-income families in time for Christmas. You can help by adopting your own letter at the new USPS website, USPSoperationsanta.com or you can Donate Now to Be An Elf. Gifts are tax-deuctible. Either way, you’ll catch the true spirit of the holidays and help put smiles on the faces of needy kids on Christmasmorning.
Thanks for being an Elf! Please share this website on your social media, and if you like, edit one of our Sample tweets and posts.
Notes
Before 2020, two postal branches in New York City and Chicago still offered the traditional walk-in program, in which the public could read letters in person at the two branches. The USPS welcomed walk-ins from 1912 to 2019, but in 2020 the walk-in program was canceled due to Covid 19. The good news was that the Postal Service launched its new online program in 2020, expanding it to millions of Americans. In the year of Covid, the public could safely adopt letters to Santa from home, and volunteers adopted tens of thousands of the neediestletters.
_Below is a 2011 cable news interview with Be An Elf’s Patrick Reynolds about the USPS ® program. Although Operation Santa is now fully online, this news report captures the heart feelings of volunteering. Our website accurately reflects today’s program. IN OUR ANNUAL NEWS RELEASE, WE ASK EDITORS TO COVER THE USPS OPERATION SANTA ® STORY AND TAG COVERAGE WITH A MENTION OF BEANELF.ORG AS A RESOURCE AND GUIDE TO VOLUNTEERING FOR THE USPS ® PROGRAM._
IF YOU ARE STRUGGLING FINANCIALLY and unable to buy enough Christmas gifts for your kids this year, our volunteers may be able to help out. Please note there is no guarantee your letter will be adopted by volunteers. Your family’s letters to Santa should be sent in one envelope and mailed around Thanksgiving, but no later than December 14th. Address them to Santa Claus, 123 Elf Road, North Pole 88888. Mail your family’s letters in one envelope so you’ll be adopted as a family. Of course, your kids may ask Santa for whatever they want, but we recommend that one parent enclose a cover letter describing the family’s present circumstances, and why you need help with Christmas this year. Please remember there is no guarantee a volunteer will respond, and that Be An Elf _only_ adopts letters from the USPS website. We do not respond to people who email us directly; instead, we adopt letters through the USPS Operation Santa website, USPSoperationsanta.com . In short, before your family writes its letters to Santa we urge you to read our Seeking gifts? page. IF YOU’RE A VOLUNTEER WITH KIDS OF YOUR OWN, explain to your kids you want to send extra gifts to a child whose parents can’t buy their kids much this year. Reassure them that of course, Santa will still get the original letter the child wrote and Santa will send hisgifts, too.
BE AN ELF IS A TAX-EXEMPT CHARITY. While not affiliated with USPS Operation Santa ®, Be An Elf supports it by recruiting thousands of new volunteers for it through a major grant from Google; by providing an excellent guide to volunteering on our How to be an Elf page; and by creating public awareness of the program online, and through our annual news release. Not least, our site offers tips for parents from low-income families to write more effective letters on our Seeking Gifts?page.
Since 2007, Google has given us $10,000 per month in free advertising. OUR MISSION is to make more underprivileged children smile on Christmas morning and to inspire people with the real spirit of Christmas. Together we can bring joy to more children at Christmas. PLEASE MAKE A TAX-DEDUCTIBLE GIFT AND DONATE NOWTO BE AN ELF.
