We have been performing Bach’s St Matthew Passion in the Grote Kerk, in Naarden, since 1922. Shunske Sato has played the St Matthew Passion many times before with the Netherlands Bach Society, under a variety of well-known guest conductors. In his fourth season as artistic director, Shunske is conducting Bach's masterpiece 'ENGLISH' SUITE NO. 1 IN A MAJOR The quasi-improvised flourish that opens this Suite in A major – and thus the whole set of six ‘English’ suites – sounds like an enthusiastic welcome and invitation. Compared to other sets of keyboard music by Bach that clearly functioned as teaching material for his children and students, or which demonstrated his mastery of composition, the ‘English’ suites appear to be mainlyMASS IN B MINOR
Sublime, extreme and all-embracing only superlatives will do to describe Bach’s Mass in B minor.In between an awe-inspiring Kyrie and the jubilant final Dona nobis pacem, there are nine completely unique arias and duets, fourteen impressive ensemble sections for four, five, six and even eight voices, a broad spectrum of instrumental solos, and an incredible variety of styles. 'FRENCH' SUITE NO. 5 IN G MAJOR The fifth ‘French’ suite is the most tuneful and elegant of the six. It is also the most Italian, says harpsichordist Francesco Corti. You can hear that straight away in the Allemande, but even in the Sarabande – a piece where Bach usually searches for harmonic 'BRANDENBURG' CONCERTO NO. 3 IN G MAJOR Bach chooses an unusual form and instrumentation. This concerto is remarkable for its unusual form and instrumentation. Bach composed it for three violins, three violas, three cellos and basso continuo. In other words, 3x3, which is a rational choice you would expect from a modernist like Pierre Boulez, rather than a Baroque composer likeBach.

And indeed, even though Bach did not really have a choice, the key of B minor did stand for melancholy in the Baroque. Das Wohltemperirte Clavier, BWV 846-893. Composing 48 keyboard pieces in all 24 keys was the sort of challengeBach enjoyed.

For much of his life, Bach worked as a cantor in Leipzig, composing a great deal of church music. If things had turned out slightly differently, he might also have become a celebrated opera composer. FUGA SOPRA IL MAGNIFICAT Bach fools his listener with a quasi-fugue. In view of the title Fuga sopra il Magnificat, you would expect a more prominent function for the melody in this compact organ prelude. His heartening Ein deutsches Requiem, with words from Martin Luther's German translation of the Bible, forms the starting point for a seventeenth-century remake by Jos.Our former artistic director compiled a requiem to the words used by Brahms, with a starring role for vocal-instrumental repertoire. CANON A 4 QUAERENDO INVENIETIS FROM MUSIKALISCHES OPFER Canons – pieces of music whereby one part is notated from which several voices can then be derived – come in all shapes and sizes. They may be very simple, like the song Frère Jacques, but also extremely complex.The ten canons in Bach’s Musikalisches Opfer range from those that are solved fairly simply to ingenious puzzles.. This Canon a 4 is a real puzzle.MASS IN B MINOR
Secular music also found its way into the Mass in B minor, albeit set to words from the Mass. Bach created a large-scale Mass, drawing on his own work from a period of many years.The composer probably accepted the fact that this work might never be heard in its entirety during his lifetime.THE APOCALYPSE
For much of his life, Bach worked as a cantor in Leipzig, composing a great deal of church music. If things had turned out slightly differently, he might also have become a celebrated opera composer. NTR SATURDAY MATINEE Carl Heinrich Graun was an opera man, composing almost thirty operas in all, which were strongly influenced by the Italian style. In 1740, Graun became Kapellmeister to Frederick the Great, a music-loving monarch who also appointed Bach’s son Carl Philipp Emanuel asharpsichordist.

We have been performing Bach’s St Matthew Passion in the Grote Kerk, in Naarden, since 1922. Shunske Sato has played the St Matthew Passion many times before with the Netherlands Bach Society, under a variety of well-known guest conductors. In his fourth season as artistic director, Shunske is conducting Bach's masterpiece VIOLIN SONATA NO. 3 IN C MAJOR In these sonatas, the violinist starts out alone in various movements, and Corelli suggests a fugue. But what is merely suggested by Corelli is rigorously carried out by Bach: real fugues for a single violinist. The most impressive result is the monumental Fugue in this Sonata no. 3, which is full of contrapuntal tricks. ALLEIN GOTT IN DER HÖH SEI EHR BWV 676 Title Allein Gott in der Höh sei Ehr Instrument Organ Genre organ works Serie Clavier-Übung III Year ca. 1739 City Leipzig Special notes There is a variation on this chorale arrangement, BWV676a.
THE WELL-TEMPERED CLAVIER I NO. 24 IN B MINOR Bach biographer Spitta wrote that this stirring music “made the expression of pain almost unbearable”. And indeed, even though Bach did not really have a choice, the key of B minor did stand for melancholy in the Baroque. Das Wohltemperirte Clavier, BWV 846-893. Composing 48 keyboard pieces in all 24 keys was the sort of challengeBach enjoyed.
FUGA SOPRA IL MAGNIFICAT Bach fools his listener with a quasi-fugue. In view of the title Fuga sopra il Magnificat, you would expect a more prominent function for the melody in this compact organ prelude. But the Gregorian Magnificat melody that Bach uses here is persistent. It evidently comes from a different musical era, which was still dominated by the old churchmodes.

Not the Netherlands Bach Society itself, and not a renowned soloist, but eight talented young pianists (aged between 7 and 15) performed Bach’s fifteen inventions for All of Bach, in April 2016. The pieces, which Bach once wrote as exercises for children, were performed on harpsichord, just like in Bach’sday.
