The latest attention in the press to our injured Black Hawk-Eagle has certainly endeared many Trinbagonians to this raptor. Dr. Gobin is a Marine Biologist with tremendous environmental and ecological experience in the ORANGE-WINGED PARROT Orange-winged Parrot - Asa Wright Nature Centre. Orange-winged Parrot. (Amazona amazonica) Not only is the Orange-winged Parrot a noisy creature but it is the most common parrot in Trinidad and Tobago. These two features allow it to be seen regularly by birders and non-birders alike, despite its expert ability to be camouflaged amongfoliage.

(Psarocolius decumanus) Also called the Yellow-Tailed Cornbird and Weaver Bird, is a well-known feature at the Centre and is distributed throughout valleys of the northern range. Asa Wright Nature Centre provides a unique setting for an incredible assortment of flora and fauna. Along with the exciting bird life, other creatures include the 29 species of bats that have been recorded in the Arima Valley. Occasional sightings could also include Agouti, Paca and Nine-banded Armadillos as well as Iguanas and Tegu Lizards.ABOUT OILBIRDS
A special attraction of the Asa Wright Nature Centre is a breeding colony of the nocturnal Oilbird, or Guacharo (Steatornis caripensis). Located in Dunston Cave, a beautiful riparian grotto on the property, this is the only easily accessible colony known of this remarkable species. In 1936 Joseph and Helen Bruce-Holmes bought Spring Hill Plantation (now the Asa Wright Nature Centre) from the government, which acquired it in default of taxes. Mr. Holmes, an oilfield engineer, was particularly interested in the property because of the very accessible Oilbird Cave. They renovated the plantation house, and lived in their“Garden of

Butterflies enliven this green tropical landscape with their brilliant flashing colors. More than 600 species occur in Trinidad and many of these can be seen within the grounds of the Centre. The continental origin and proximity of Trinidad to South America, as well as a multiplicity of habitats, have resulted in an unusually diverse fauna. The species lists are impressive: 108 mammals; 460 birds; 55 reptiles; 25 amphibians; and 617 butterflies. No other area in the West Indies, and few, if any, areas of comparable size CONSERVATION & EDUCATION The use of its resources to promote conservation through education and research, are among the top priorities of the Asa Wright Nature Centre. Such fear has been widely fuelled by combinations of misconceptions, misinformation, religious beliefs and outright shared ignorance.
