THE COLISEUM, GIOVANNI BATTISTA PIRANESI The Colosseum is the most famous remnant of ancient Rome. Also called the Flavian Amphitheater, it was built under three successive emperors of the Flavius family (Vespasian, Titus, and Domitian) in the years 76 to 92 CE. Today many sports stadiums can trace their oval design to this masterpiece of Roman architecture. Piranesi’s skewed perspective makes us feel as if we were looking at the VEILED LADY, RAFFAELO MONTI We can’t see through stone, but through tricks of light and polish, Raffaelo Monti created the illusion that we can. On his Veiled Lady, the top of the head and shoulders are polished smooth, to reflect light. But where the veil falls across the face, the marble is less polished. It reflects less light, suggesting the texture of fabric. Sculptures of veiled figures peaked in popularity TEAPOT, FROM A TEA SERVICE, PAUL REVERE, JR. The most complete Revere service known, this set of which this teapot is a part was made for a Boston merchant and his wife, John and Mehitable Templeman. It includes one of only two tea caddies made by Revere. The locked boxes held loose tea, an expensive and fashionable commodity. The shell-shaped spoon was used for measuring tea and the sieve was used for straining punch, a beverage often TAHITIAN LANDSCAPE, PAUL GAUGUIN Paul Gauguin went to Tahiti in 1891 in search of new, exotic motifs, but also to escape European civilization, which he felt was artificial and spiritually bankrupt. Here, Renoir depicts the domes of the Cathedral of San Marco gleaming in the midday sun. This painting was left in a sketch-like state without any studio reworking. What began as a way for the artist to share observations of life in lockdown and the pain caused by the pandemic, soon became an exercise in chronicling his thoughts MIA’S PERIOD ROOMS –– MINNEAPOLIS INSTITUTE OF ART The Tudor Room was the first period room installed at Mia, in 1923. Its oak paneling dates to about 1600 and was probably once part of a private chamber used for eating, sitting, and entertaining guests. This show brings together methods of visual storytelling and ancestral memory through the individual practices of artists from the “Black Belt” region of the American South—a term that refers to the region’s black soil, as well as the legacies of African Americans who COVID-19 –– MINNEAPOLIS INSTITUTE OF ART Covid-19. To protect the health and well-being of visitors and staff and in compliance with the state of Minnesota’s Covid-19 restrictions, the Minneapolis Institute of Art is temporarily closed to the public.
