19 – 20 December. The evacuation of Suvla and Anzac Cove begins. This was a surprisingly successful operation during which no New Zealand casualties were sustained. Of the 8556 New Zealanders who served on Gallipoli, 2721 died and 4752 were wounded – an 87 percent casualty rate.

Caesar was an English bulldog that became the mascot of A Company, 4 th Battalion, New Zealand Rifle Brigade during World War I and before the troops embarked overseas, he led the grand parade down Queen Street in Auckland, as they marched to the wharves.. Caesar was also a trained Red Cross dog, and once on the battlefields of the Western Front in 1916, he was used to help stretcher FACILITIES AND ACCESSIBILITY A interactive play space for families. This artefact is a 1822 Pattern Cavalry sword & scabbard currently on display as part of the “Harnessed: New Zealand’s War Horses” exhibition. This sword & scabbard belonged to Colonel Thomas William Porter. BOOSTING MORALE ON THE WESTERN FRONT: THE DIGGER PIERROTS Boosting Morale on the Western Front: The Digger Pierrots. The featured costume belonged to Sergeant Major Alick Donaldson, originally a bank clerk from Geraldine. The Fullerphone. This artefact is a Fullerphone. The Fullerphone is a portable telegraph signalling device that was used in both world wars. Invented by Algernon Clement Fuller, a member of the Signals Corps with the British Army in World War I, the device was designed to put a stop to the Germans intercepting intelligence in the trenches. The featured costume belonged to Sergeant Major Alick Donaldson, originally a bank clerk from Geraldine. The incredible events of the Anzacs is a tale of harsh realities, courage, defeat, pride and spirit in war. Charles Upham — New Zealand’s greatest war hero. Charles Upham was born in Christchurch on 21 September 1908. He was educated at Waihi School near Timaru, Christ’s College and Canterbury Agricultural College (Lincoln). In his twenties, he spent some time as a high country shepherd, a musterer and farm manager.NEW ZEALAND ARMY
