arcadeblogger.com is not a commercial venture. Working with limited technical hardware, the arcade manufacturers of the 80’s had to think outside of the box. Constantly delivering commercially successful immersive experiences to a demanding and fickle public was no easy task. Graphics, game play, sounds, artwork, controls and hardware all playedan

TIME-OUT ARCADE: AMAZING CLASSIC ARCADE PICTURES A remarkable set of photographs to share with you this week. Time-Out Amusement Centers were a chain of arcades located in malls across America back in the day. As the brainchild of entrepreneur Tico Bonomo, they were striking-looking places, notable by their bold colours and 'Tunnel'-like appearance - a pastiche of what the arcadescene
ATARI CENTIPEDE UPRIGHT RESTORATION 1 I picked this cabinet up a few weeks back (you can read about that adventure here). Upright Centipedes are lovely looking machines; the artwork is arguably the most iconic of Atari's efforts from the early eighties. Over 45,000 of these units were built, making it one of the great commercial successes of the company's early 80s BRADLEY TRAINER: ATARI’S TOP SECRET MILITARY PROJECT Atari's Battlezone arcade game released in 1981 was an immediate classic. This first-person wire frame vector shoot-em-up, puts the player at the controls of a tank wandering the wilderness of a futuristic-looking battlefield, shooting down enemy tanks, UFOs and missiles. Around 15,000 machines were rolled out of Atari's factory in both upright and cabaret form.
