When the COVID-19 pandemic had taken hold in the United States, Bloomberg’s CityLab launched a competition for its readers: create the map that defines your life during the coronavirus crisis. The original call went out in April, and after 400 submissions, a selection was published in June. MAP OF THE WEEK: THE LOST COLONY OF ROANOKE Roanoke was established in 1587 by a group of 115 English settlers. The colony was located on the outer banks of what is today Dare County, North Carolina. The exhibition was lead by England native John White in hopes of building a naval port for English ships to OKEANOS TECHNOLOGIES: WATERCHIP DESALINATION DEVELOPMENT Okeanos Technologies formed in 2012 to develop a next-generation, desalination technology to address the planet’s increasing fresh water shortages. Okeanos aims to lessen the impact of fresh water shortages that include, economic development, human health, environmental degradation and political instability. The most common surnames are Murphy, Kelly, Ó’Sullivan, Walsh, and Smith. The earliest known Irish surname, O Cleirigh is an example of an occupational surname and is given to someone descended from a clerk. The fellowship is open to all graduate student affiliates of the American Geographical Society. Each fellowship is worth $1,500 and a total of four will be awarded in the Spring.
