The analysis behind the ACSM American Fitness Index includes scientific evidence, expert opinion, and statistical methodologies to select, weigh, and combine physical activity, health, and infrastructure data to rank the 100 largest cities in the U.S. PHYSICAL ACTIVITY ARCHIVES Walking is a simple and easy way to add physical activity to daily schedules and since it’s free, it’s available to everybody. Since the first edition of the ACSM American Fitness Index® data report, ACSM has recognized the importance of walking for a healthy lifestyle. STAYING ACTIVE DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC: MEETING Children and adolescents aged six to 17 years need at least 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity daily. Adults need 150 minutes a week of moderate-to-vigorous-intensity activity. Lastly, regardless of your age, some physical activity is better than none. NUTRITIONAL STRATEGIES FOR HEALTHY AGING Minimize high-calorie, low nutrient-dense foods (e.g., foods with excess calories but few nutrients, such as chips, desserts, baked goods, soda and alcohol). Reduce saturated and trans fats (e.g., animal products, margarine, fried and processed foods). Drink enough liquids to ensure proper hydration and prevent dehydration.
