IDAHO MOUNTAINS: SALMON RIVER MOUNTAINS Overview . This block-shaped region of central Idaho boasts some of the most spectacular scenery in the country. HEAVENS GATE SCENIC TRAIL, HELLS CANYON ID Heavens Gate Trail. Heaven’s Gate Trail is a short, high altitude scenic hike with a spectacular view of four states from the lookout at trail’s end. BEN ROSS RESERVOIR IDAHO FISHING, CAMPING, BOATING Ben Ross Reservoir is a 50 mile drive from McCall. Head northwest on Hwy 55 to New Meadows, then continue on Hwy 95 for about 34 miles to Indian Valley Rd. Turn left and the reservoir is about 6 miles ahead. The cabin was originally built in 1862 by John Welch, a supplier who made runs between Lewiston and Idaho City, when, during a supply run, he ran into snow and weather in Little Salmon Meadows that prevented him from reaching Boise Basin.
