PYTHON – ALBERTO MILONE'S HOME After spending a week in Sunnyvale I’m back from the UDS. It was a long trip and I can definitely say out loud that it was a fantastic experience, very hard to put into words, part of which you’ll be able to see in the video-recorded sessions (available soon?). ENVY 0.8.2 HAS BEEN RELEASED! Envy 0.8.2 features a new option (“5 – Install the ATI/NVIDIA driver Manually”) which will enable users to choose the version of the (ATI/Nvidia) driver between the list of available drivers instead of relying upon Envy’s automatic detection.. Of course automatic hardware detection is still there.A FEW UPDATES
Features in EnvyNG 1.1.x. A new interface in GTK. Its code will be cleaner (more readable and sensible). I will use SimpleGladeApp as glatzor (Sebastian Heinlein) suggested a long time ago. A NEW TOOL TO IMPORT/EXPORT YOUR MAIL AND SETTINGS IN A few days ago I was looking for a guide to export my mail and settings (my accounts, address book, calendar, filters, etc.) to my laptop and I found a few guides. PLEASE UPDATE TO ENVY_0.8.1-0UBUNTU3_ALL.DEB Please update to envy_0.8.1-0ubuntu3_all.deb, it solves a problem with Dapper which doesn’t use “dash”, therefore no symbolic link to dash or bash is created any more. GETTING BACK TETHERING ON ANDROID JELLYBEAN Follow these steps: Connect your phone to your PC using the USB cable. Check your devices and their IP addresses: (Make sure that tethering is disabled and that your 3G/2G/HSUPA connection is enabled and running) sudo adb kill-server sudo adb start-server adb shell su netcfg. ATI CATALYST DRIVER 8.3 IN ENVY LEGACY AND ENVYNG The ATI Catalyst driver 8.3 is now available in Envy Legacy and EnvyNG.You can check the release notes of the driver here.. As regards the future of EnvyNG, I’m glad to say that the GTK GUI for EnvyNG 1.1.0 is finished and the QT4 interface is in good shape. ENVY, THE NEW ATI/NVIDIA DRIVER, LOCALISATION There are a few changes in this new release: 1) the new NVIDIA driver 100.14.23 is now available. 2) the new ATI driver 8.42.3 is available, however I have to say a few things about it: * Compiz might be a bit slow, at least on my X1600 (make sure you’re using Compiz 0.6 orhigher)
ENVY BRINGS THE LATEST DRIVERS FOR CHRISTMAS A new release of Envy is available. Here’s the changelog: * Added: Nvidia driver 169.07 * Removed: Nvidia driver 100.14.23 * Added: AMD Catalyst driver 7.12 ENVY AND NVIDIA CUDA As you might already know, the latest release of the Nvidia driver includes the CUDA driver. Unfortunately the packages generated by Envy lacked the new files which made it possible to use the CUDA Toolkit (on both Debian and Ubuntu). GETTING BACK TETHERING ON ANDROID JELLYBEAN Apparently Android >= 4.1.2 breaks tethering in some cases.. Basically you can connect to your phone but you will get no data whatsoever. This may be fair (at least from Google’s point of view) if your mobile phone operator doesn’t allow tethering and Google wants torespect that.
MINI-HOWTO: USING ENVY ON UBUNTU GUTSY (WARNING: USE IT AT thank you very much! I just successfully installed on gutsy tribe 6 and nForce 8400M GS 1280*800 @60. In my case I experienced an extended (over 1280×800) login window and and a very slow desktop with very small text in taskbar.Skip to content

INTRODUCTION
My name is Alberto Milone, software engineer and grammar enthusiast, born in Turin in 1983, raised in Lecce (Italy), and world citizen. Here are some details you might want to know about me.EDUCATION
* BA in English and Spanish (2005) at Università degli Studi diLecce.
* MA in English and Spanish (2008) at Università del Salento.INTERESTS
The English language, Grammar, Free Software Development on GNU/Linux, Music (acoustic guitar), not necessarily in this order.JOB
I have worked as a SOFTWARE ENGINEER for CANONICAL since March 2009. I mainly deal with hardware enablement in UBUNTU, an amazing operating system that we develop and ship on laptops, desktops and soon also on phones andtablets.
Give Ubuntu a try when you have the chance, you will be pleasantlysurprised:
AREAS OF EXPERTISE
* Hardware enablement (kernel/X.Org hacking) * General software hacking (I love fixing bugs and adding new features in programs) * Debian/Ubuntu packaging (I am an Ubuntu Core Developer) * Smooth user experience with non-free graphics drivers HOW I GOT INVOLVED IN SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT After deciding never to deal with Windows again, I struggled with some rather nasty hardware problems on Linux. Needing a computer that worked properly, I ended up learning much more than I apparently needed, teaching myself how to program, so as to be able to automate all the things that I had learnt. The first program – and probably the most popular program of mine to date – that I wrote for Ubuntu is “ENVY” (later to be known as “ENVYNG“). It solved a simple problem: downloading, properly installing, and configuring the NVIDIA graphics driver. A rather daunting task back in 2005. The program became so popular that it was adopted by Linux Mint (codename “Bea”) in 2006 and by Ubuntu (“Hardy”) in 2008. Needless to say, that was just the beginning of my amazing journey in the world of software development. Funny how computer issues can change your life for the better. Decode Theme by MachoThemes
