HOW THE BODY KEEPS THE SCORE: INTENSIVE TRAUMA TREATMENT By Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, PESI, January 7, 2020 Trauma is horrendous. It overwhelms its victims and often the people who try to treat it. It reshapes one’s sense of self, bodily experience and brain organization — leaving people stuck in terror, isolation, and shame. My life’s work has been to find the most effective pathways to healing trauma. It’s why I founded the Trauma CenterTO HEAL A COMMUNITY
What does it mean to be a "trauma-Informed community"? It's a question we at Peace4Tarpon ask ourselves frequently - and the answer evolves as we discover through this journey who we are and how we are. I am still processing the story I am about to share with you. It's not the feel-good type with a tidy ending but more like a series of snapshots cut into puzzle pieces that don't quite mesh. TRAUMA INFORMED EDUCATORS NETWORK PODCAST There are now 10 episodes on the Trauma Informed Educators Network Podcast. The most recent was with Kat Stern in the UK who is currently working on developing and researching a trauma-informed method being used with incarcerated youth in the UK. Her knowledge is equally as captivating as per passion. Previous episodes included interviews with Dr. Bruce Perry, Ingrid Cochren, and Dr. Lori CATCHING UP WITH KELSEY FROM 'PAPER TIGERS' (PIVOT) 2.02 Nor can one simply deduce a one-size-fits-all solution to a trauma-informed education. But there is no denying something both subtle and powerful at work between teacher and student alike: the quiet persistence of love. DOCUMENTARY BROKEN PLACES USES ARCHIVAL FOOTAGE TO TELL Why do children exposed to the same level of adversity in childhood have different outcomes? Why do some thrive and others become completely damaged? These were the kinds of burning questions that prompted filmmaker Roger Weisberg to produce the documentary Broken Places , which was shown in a private screening at the 2018 National ACEs Conference in San Francisco. ACES IN THE LGBTQ COMMUNITY Hi everyone, I'm posting this to find out if there is interest on ACEs Connection for a new community group, focused specifically on ACEs in the LGBTQ Community. Personally, as someone who is a part of the LGBTQ community, I would love to have a community page here for whats going on in the LGBTQ community affected by ACEs. Data has shown that lesbian, gay, and bisexual community have TRAUMA INFORMED PRACTICE: AN OVERVIEW Trauma-informed organizational change Classrooms and schools show reduced disciplinary problems, improved educational outcomes Child welfare and foster care systems improve outcomes for at-risk children Primary care clinics improve health outcomes for children and families Psychiatric hospitals and residential treatment centers eliminate seclusion and restraint, ARE LOCKDOWN DRILLS TRAUMA INFORMED? Step 3: Re-Integrate. Finally, returning to a relaxed-activated state culminates the drill. Cue students into two to three forward folds, which helps the body tap into a calming response. To transition back to learning, use the breathing ball and take 10 belly breaths. As long as lockdown drills are a reality for our schools, we can support our WORKING FROM HOME? TEN TIPS TO LOOK PROFESSIONAL ON ZOOM Hi ACEs Community, normally I post about healing from childhood trauma but THIS is a short video I made at home to help those of you who are working from home and using Zoom in new and bigger ways, or for the first time. Enjoy! Since COVID-19 changed our lives, I've been consulting to institutional and corporate clients re: new uses of Zoom for teams, meetings, marketing and leadership. It’s why I founded the Trauma Center PACES CONNECTION REACTS When you block a person, they can no longer invite you to a private message or post to your profile wall. By Arelis R. Hernández and Griff Witte , June 2, 2021, for the Washington Post Not long after George Floyd was murdered on a Minneapolis street last Memorial Day, Meghan Dougherty felt an awakening in her suburban Texas school district. Teachers received training in the role that race had played in creating the United States’ vast inequalities. Students, parents and faculty members spent their summers studying and debating how to combat generations of systemic racism. Some crafted a plan to...Read Story

NONPROFIT HELPS PARENTS TALK TO THEIR CHILDREN ABOUT RACE Jenna Quinn (PACEs Connection Staff)6/4/21__4:00 AM
By Alex Daniels , June 3, 2021, for the Chronicles of Philanthropy News about the police killing of George Floyd was everywhere. Officials at the Berkeley, Calif., school, where Perfecta Oxholm’s son attended kindergarten last year, decided not to talk directly about the death with the students. That didn’t stop the children from asking questions. Over the next year, an anti-racism group started by Oxholm delved into ways parents could answer those questions and discuss race with their...Read Story

NEW PATHWAYS FOR EDUCATION REFORM Jenna Quinn (PACEs Connection Staff)6/4/21__4:00 AM
By Bruno V. Manno , Summer 2021 , for the Stanford Social Innovation Review, Philanthropic support for the K-12 education reform movement is not immune to the institutional dysfunction and gridlock emblematic of American politics. This impasse disbanded the long-standing bipartisan K-12 reform coalition that advanced accountability in schools, which led to notable improvements in student achievement scores, especially for disadvantaged students. The coalition’s demise has affected education...Read Story
