PLAYING THE RECORDER: AN IMPORTANT STEP ON THE PATH TO MUSIC LITERACY Music is often referred to as a universal language. Though it may vary greatly from place to place, music is everywhere. Understanding this language allows you to sit down and make music with anyone, regardless of where in the world they come from. It also allows you to understand a piece of music, regardless of where or when it was written. As a music educator, it is my responsibility to ensure that our students not only build the skills needed to understand this important language, but also build the confidence to participate in music-making experiences long after they graduate from*
WHEN AM I GOING TO USE THIS STUFF? My mom wasn’t good at math, so I probably won't be either! When am I ever going to use this in the real world? Math sucks! I don’t get it! Find X?? We’ve all heard, said, or even felt these sayings deep down in our soul at one point or another. I too myself have said these words multiple times in elementary, middle, high school and even college. The reason I became a teacher is so that students didn’t have to feel the same way about math that I did. Math is more than just numbers and words in a textbook. Math really is*
SECOND GRADE SALE
Do you like raising money to help others? Second graders do! Every year around this time, we focus our attention on helping others, writing persuasive paragraphs, and learning about what it means to produce and consume goods. When you mesh these ideas together, you have the ever popular, Second Grade Sale! We take our sale very seriously. Weeks prior to this event, students are meticulously creating projects out of recycled boxes, cans, toilet paper rolls, bottle caps, wood pieces, etc. This year, we collaborated with Ms. Nicole S., the Collaboratory Instructor, to help bring students imaginative ideas to life with*
MAKING MOMENTS IN 1ST GRADE When I reflect on my time here, I never see it in totality, but rather in the tiny moments that make up all the years. Tiny moments, after all, are what life is all about! And for the past eight years, 1st grade has been such a large part of my own life. First grade has so many of my favorite memories and highlights. Whether it’s learning to read, adding double-digit numbers, or becoming independent writers, these milestones are achieved through the culmination of many small moments. Since our first day together, every second has been of significance; we have*
THE POWER OF WORDS
As I share my words, I will borrow from others. “Your word is the power that you have to create. It is a gift.” -Don Miguel Ruiz From the first words we speak to those who made us, to the words spoken about us when we pass from this world…words are with us, weaving the tapestry of our lives. They are the most basic tool of language, yet they are immensely powerful in defining who and what we are. A word can hurt or heal, inspire or hinder, connect or disconnect, encourage or discourage, as well as stimulate innumerable thoughts,*
ECE HELPING HANDS
The Dolphins happily participated in our annual ECE Helping Hands Sale! On Helping Hands Day, the ECE programs team up to raise money to shine light on the siblings and families of critically ill children in Los Angeles through a wonderful organization called the Elizabeth A. MacDonald Foundation (EAMF). Elizabeth MacDonald is a former HSH parent, and we have teamed up with her in past years to host a sale at our school with all of the proceeds going to the EAMF! The preschool and JK children create interesting and original items for sale, and we invite the entire school and*
THIRD GRADE EXPLORES LOS ANGELES Every year, as a part of our Social Studies curriculum, third grade studies the history of the Los Angeles region. We began with learning about landforms such as mountains, rivers, basins, hills, and valleys, which eventually led to our study of Los Angeles specific landforms such as the Hollywood Hills, Los Angeles River, San Gabriel Mountains, and San Fernando Valley. To further apply our studies of Los Angeles, we took field trips that allowed for us to apply our knowledge. Our first field trip of the year was to the Griffith Observatory, in which we took advantage of our ability* 1

FORMIDABLE JOY
_HSH FOR H2O_
HOLLYWOOD SCHOOLHOUSEand
FORMIDABLE JOY
,
partnered to create _HSH FOR H20_…change for change, a three-week fundraising and service-learning campaign where children learned about the global water crisis and fundraised to bring a new water well to a community in Malawi, Africa. Since the launch of the campaign on February 18, it was very rewarding to witness students’ enthusiasm in learning about the cause and taking an active role in making a difference in the lives of others. HSH FOR H20 HIGHLIGHTS: * Every class (ECE through Grade 6, over 300 students) received an age-appropriate presentation from Formidable Joy. * A custom H20 logo was created and all students received an H20sticker.
* JUST Water partnered with us and donated water to all the students and staff. They will also highlighted our efforts on their socialmedia platform.
* After enjoying their JUST Water, students decorated their JUST bottles and transformed them into coin-collecting devices. * Children took an active and engaging role in fundraising in a child-friendly campaign called…CHANGE FOR CHANGE. * We looked to adults to donate through our HSH for H20 online fundraising campaign. * A tippy tap (a hand-washing station made of branches, buckets & rope) was constructed, and was on the school yard for students to explore and experience. * The front office featured a full Jerry Can that we asked people to try to lift (be careful it weighs 40lbs). * Every class received Formidable Fact sheets that included information about the global water crisis, Malawi specifics, and everyday water usage facts. * The younger classes (ECE through Grade 3) read the water-related children’s book _The Water Princess_ in the library. * Additional water-related books, _A Long Walk to Water_ and _The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind_ were donated to the library. * Water Bingo was a big hit at lunchtime! Switch B-I-N-G-O for W-A-T-E-R. A great way for the “littles” to learn their letters &numbers.
* Every day we heard stories of what students are doing to collect change. (one student launched her very own _CHORES FOR CHANGE__ _campaign, and she has already raised over $150!) * Another young student made signs, asked for donations and sold JUST Water at local hiking trails..her brother hit the skate parks * Grade 3 raised money & awareness with a lemonade stand on Larchmont Boulevard. They raised $432 in just 2 hours! * Grade 2 students donated half of the proceeds from their annual sale to the cause. They raised over $2000!! * 4th Graders collected so much change via their JUST Water bottles that their Jerry Can weighed over 30lbs! * 5th & 6th Graders read _A Long Walk to Water_, and are connecting water facts they learned in class to real life and worthy lessons fromacross the globe.
* Student Council members created and placed Formidable Fact posters around campus. They are shared even more facts at Monday morning meetings each week. They were also available to answer any of your water-related questions. * Mindfulness is an important of part of the HSH community. We created custom, guided meditations with an emphasis on empathy andjoy.
* Each time a student returned their coins or a parent donated online, the student’s name was added to a water drop on the Water Wall bulletin board. * An anonymous generous donor came forward to offer a matching challenge grant of up to $5,000! Every online donationup
to $5,000 received by March 6, 2020 was doubled. * MARCH 6TH WAS A DAY OF JOY. Students returned their JUST Water bottle coin collections, participated in water-related activities, an obstacle course, and surprises and prizes awaited them. We ended the day celebrating our achievements with an all-school dance party. It was a day devoted to fun, physical activities and philanthropy. JUST Water joined us to capture our efforts for their social mediaplatforms.
* Fun fact – Meghan Markle is an HSH alumni. Prince Harry is President of African Parks…one of Formidable Joy’s newest partners in Malawi. The goal is that money raised from this project will benefit a community in need within the African Parks catchment area. * But wait…there’s more! The campaign doesn’t end on March 6th. We will extend the life of the JUST Water bottles by reusing & repurposing them once again. In honor of World Water Day on March 22nd, seeds will be planted into the cartons. One month later, students will plant the trees/plants on Earth Day, April 22nd. Over 300 new plants/trees will be planted…giving water to those in need, while planting our very own giving trees. * The children collected over 545 POUNDS OF CHANGE!! The ripple effects of our small local efforts have the power to makebig CHANGES.
IT ONLY TAKES A LITTLE TO MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE. CHILDREN CAN CHANGE THE WORLD…ONE DROP AT A TIME…JUST YOU WAIT ANDSEE!
Providing access to clean water benefits people and the planet: * Women and girls are responsible for collecting water—starting at sunrise, walking long distances and carrying up to 40 lbs of water ontheir heads.
* Girls often have to miss school—just to collect water for theirfamilies.
* Drinking dirty water causes diseases. * Clean water reduces CO2 emissions. * Clean water is a basic human right. Please join us in supporting this important cause by donating here:formidablejoy.org
