This industry, which utilized coke for fuel and made pig iron, had two 100-ton furnaces on line by 1886 with at least one of these producing iron in 1882. SEQUATCHIE VALLEY RAILROAD The railroad into the Sequatchie Valley was vital to future development of coal mines and coke works in the area. By 1912, investors abandoned Rexton, Tennessee along with its mines. One likely factor in the abandonment of Rexton is that the railroad into King’s Cove was partly washed out in a flash flood. This, combined with the death of Rex’s father, Frank J. Kilpatrick, in New York City on November 4, 1911, would have demoralized the chiefinvestor.

The South Pittsburg High School building pictured above was built in 1965 facing Cedar Avenue between Seventh and Eighth streets. It replaced the old public (high) school building built in 1924 that stood at this same location, but was razed to make way for a modern facilty. The old Cumberland Presbyterian Church, pictured above around 1908, was located at the corner of Holly Avenue and 6th Street. It was built in 1891 and destroyed by fire December 1, 1929. This cemetery faces Cedar Avenue and is located in the southwest corner at the intersection of Cedar and Eight Street below the Chapel on the Hill (old Primitive Baptist Church) and beside the South PittsburgHigh School.

The Wynne Cemetery is pictured above on November 26, 2005. This cemetery is located in a pasture on the Grider Farm only about 250 yards into Marion County, Tennessee at the head of King's Cove. ORME, TENNESSEE HISTORY In the above 1904 picture can be seen the coal mining town of Orme, Tennessee. This Marion County community is situated at the head of Doran's Cove about ten miles from South Pittsburg, Tennessee. SOUTH PITTSBURG HISTORY Doctor Hiram Beene Moore, who was born on January 1, 1914, treated South Pittsburg residents and those from outlying communities for several decades at South Pittsburg, Tennessee. This well respected African-American doctor is pictured above in 1970. Dr. Moore passed away August 9, 2005. SPHPSINC. SOUTH PITTSBURG, TENNESSEE HISTORY & PICTURES The first of these was the Tennessee Coal & Iron Railroad’s blast furnaces, which was managed by 10-year South Pittsburg resident Joseph Lodge formerly of Delaware County, Pennsylvania. This industry, which utilized coke for fuel and made pig iron, had two 100-ton furnaces on line by 1886 with at least one of these producing iron in 1882. The South Pittsburg High School building pictured above was built in 1965 facing Cedar Avenue between Seventh and Eighth streets. It replaced the old public (high) school building built in 1924 that stood at this same location, but was razed to make way for a modern facilty. The school building is still in use today.REXTON, TENNESSEE
By 1912, investors abandoned Rexton, Tennessee along with its mines. One likely factor in the abandonment of Rexton is that the railroad into King’s Cove was partly washed out in a flash flood. This, combined with the death of Rex’s father, Frank J. Kilpatrick, in New York City on November 4, 1911, would have demoralized the chiefinvestor.
SEQUATCHIE VALLEY RAILROAD The railroad into the Sequatchie Valley was vital to future development of coal mines and coke works in the area. It was also vital in the establishment of the city of South Pittsburg, Tennessee, which was where most of the local iron trade was established.GUNTER CEMETERY
