Rich in trails, Hildene is a special place to be in all seasons and year-round. With approximately 12 miles of walking trails, guests who choose these paths are immersed in nature and a variety of landscapes from woods to meadows. Our 412 acres provide sanctuary for pollinators; bees and butterflies and ground nesting birds. HILDENE FARM & GOAT DAIRY This farm, where we raise dairy goats and make cheese, is called a micro-operation. It is scaled to Hildene’s needs and a limited market and we produce excellent, non-factory-made products here. Completed in 2008, our barn combines elements of an eighteenth-century post and beam timber frame with a 21st century milking parlor,cheesemaking
ROBERT & MARY’S HOME Robert and Mary Lincoln built Hildene as a summer home at the turn of the 20th century. Robert was the only child of Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln to survive to maturity. Robert first visited Manchester as a young man in the summer of 1864 when he came to the Equinox Hotel with his mother and his brother Tad. Some forty years later he returnedSTAFF | HILDENE

Hildene, is formed from two old English words, “hil” meaning hill and “dene,” meaning valley with stream. Robert and wife Mary named their Manchester home for its location — set on a promontory between the Taconic Mountains to the west, Green Mountains to the east and the Batten Kill flowing through the valley below — hill and valley withstream.
