In the Hermitage architectural ensemble, the Small Hermitage is a link between the magnificent Baroque building of the Winter Palace and the splendid constructions of the age of Classicism - the Great Hermitage and the New Hermitage. ART WORKS - HERMITAGE Created: Pazyryk Culture. 5th - 4th century BC. Found: Pazyryk Barrow No. 5 (excavations by S.I. Rudenko, 1949). Altai Territory, Pazyryk Boundary, the Valley of the River Bolshoy Ulagan. The world's most ancient pile carpet was found in the largest of the Pazyryk burial mounds. Its decoration is rich and varied: the central field isoccupied

Created at the very height of Impressionism by the leader of the movement, Claude Monet, this work is a typical example of how the Impressionist artists sought to convey a passing glimpse or impression of nature as seen by the human eye. It was here that Catherine II organised parties known as "small hermitages" and housed paintings. On the order of Empress Catherine II the architect Yuri Velten erected a two-storey building next to the Winter Palace between 1765 and 1766. He combined features of the fading Baroque style and elements of the new fashion known as DECLARATION ON THE IMPORTANCE AND VALUE OF UNIVERSAL MUSEUMS Declaration on the importance and value of universal museums. The composition and manner of execution seen in the statue of Jupiter are reminiscent of the lost statue of Zeus created by Phidias for the temple at Olympia.
