Recently there has been a lot of hype about NHL lime. Or to give it a name, Natural Hydraulic Lime Mortar. As Chartered Surveyors, we will only recommend hot lime mortars these days. The reason for this is a little complex chemically, but it's lost in the mists of time. This is how lime used to be made. You took limestone, burned it, added water, and mixed sand with it to make mortar. CLEANING MOSS FROM ROOF Ferrous sulphate is the main active ingredient of moss killers which are sold mainly for killing moss in lawns. Sold in this form, it is legal to transport as a garden product. Sold as a chemical, it needs specialist carriers. So we sell it as a garden product! For cleaning your roof, you will need to test a small area with a 1% Ferrous Sulphate solution (ie. 10gms/1L of water).HERITAGE HOUSE

The topic of Breathable Masonry Paint is probably one of the most common questions that I'm asked about. To understand it, you have to delve into the meaning of 'breathable' and then understand how this relates to allowing water into or out of a building. Breathable Masonry paint is almost an oxymoron. Manufacturers sell paint as 'protective, waterproof, seal your walls, weatherproof' - andHERITAGE HOUSE

The house is solid walled, built with stone, on shallow foundations. The walls usually rest on wider stones at the base which spread weight. Old houses have a multitude of window and door types. We have one overarching piece of advice for anyone with an old house. External joinery will only deteriorate if it gets wet. And stays wet. HOME INSULATION CAUSES DAMP Condensation creates damp conditions which often soak insulation. We are now getting many calls from people who have had cavity wall insulation - their house is getting colder and colder. The reason is simple. Cavity walls were designed to breathe. We've had many enquiries about insulation to old houses, especially to the inside of the external walls. It seems at first glance very sensible. Insulate the inside of the house, make it nice and warm, cozy - no heat loss. The only trouble is, things just don't work that way. Solid walls, if they are dry, don't lose a lot of heat. The thicker they are, the less they lose.HERITAGE HOUSE
This system is yet another of the completely useless damp proofing cons which defaces your building. These horrible people will come and drill holes in the wall, and cement silly bricks into it which they claim will let damp evaporate. They claim on their website that the system is 'researched' - yet you'll find NO independent research. 10gms/1L of water). HOME INSULATION CAUSES DAMP New Government schemes which promote the use of insulation, and make us install loft and cavity wall insulation are causing huge problemswith condensation.
SALT DAMAGE IN MASONRY WALLS The truth about Salts in the walls of old buildings.
