THE CHICKEN MEDICINE CABINET The Chicken Medicine Cabinet. Chickens are fairly simple animals to take care of. The day to day flock management takes only a few minutes. Overall good health can be maintained by keeping the coop clean, dry and well-ventilated, and by giving your hens plenty of space, good food and clean water. Enclosures should be as predator-proof as possible. ROBINS, DAY 12, MITES! The word mite is one of the worst four letter words ever. I’m not one to use a lot of gadgets, but having well-made tools makes the process of cooking a pleasure. HOT WEATHER CARE FOR CHICKENS High temperatures can be lethal to chickens. When the thermometer rises, chickens cope by holding out their wings and panting. Egg laying productivity decreases.EGGS FROM OLD HENS
Some past research said that after their second year, which is the most productive, hens average a decline of 5% per year. Admittedly our decline is higher than that because free range chickens sometimes lay their eggs away from the nest box and sometimes break an egg in the nest box and eat that, so those eggs don’t get harvested but theyare still laid.
DO CHICKENS TRANSMIT DISEASES TO PEOPLE? All animals, from crustaceans to humans, are hosts, both inside and out, to multitudes of bacteria and viruses. Kept in check they actually keep us healthy. Some bacteria even do essential bodyprocesses.

Oh, bless epsom salt! yes, I’ve used it for leg mites. I’ve tried the petroleum jelly cure, but it acts like flypaper for shavings and dirt, so instead I Mix a solution of one teaspoon epsom salt, one quarter cup rubbing alcohol, to 1 1/2 cups warm water. COMPOST IN THE CHICKEN RUN Compost In The Chicken Run. Problem 1: Chickens need to get plenty of fresh air and exercise. They need soft dirt to scratch in. They do best on a varied diet that includes greens and bugs. In the summer they need shade and cool earth to lie in. ASCITES IN HENS

TREATING RESPIRATORY DISEASES IN CHICKENS Usually, you’ll dilute it in water and dose them through their water font. However, your sickest hens might not be drinking. Use an eye dropper or a syringe to pour the medicated water down the hen’s throat. Tylan is a powerful drug, and more specific for severe cases and MG. Tylan might come in pill form, which makes it easy to give toan
BARE BUTTS, FEATHER LOSS AND FEATHER PICKING Bare Butts, Feather Loss and Feather Picking. It is a joy to see a colorful, glossy-feathered, fluffy-butted hen. Chicken skin, on the other hand, is not pretty. It’s a sad yellowish or brick color, and bumpy. When irritated it’s a painful-looking red. Chicken keepers become worried and upset and when see it. YUCK! MY HENS HAVE MESSY BOTTOMS! Don’t worry. It will eventually fall off. If it’s a real mess you can give your hen a bath. But it’s not necessary. Then again, some hens have a continuous stream of smelly, thin, runny poo stuck to their feathers. This is often a sign of vent gleet, which is a yeast infection. Vent gleet can be an ongoing problem. MY CHICKEN LOOKS SICK! NOW WHAT? Feel her weight. Sick chickens quickly become emaciated and their keel bones stick out. Isolate her (I use a dog crate) so that you can keep an eye on the poo, the food and water consumption, and whether she is laying (and what the egg looks like.) You’ll need all of these cluesto
INTRODUCING NEW HENS TO AN EXISTING FLOCK Introducing a new hen goes easier if she’s had a chance to meet the others through a fence. The best scenario is to have a pen next to the existing coop and run. Keep the new hen there for few days until no one pays her any mind (at first there might be chest thumping and pecking along the fence line.) This doesn’t count the nesting boxes (some coops have them on the floor) or the exterior covered run space. Interior air space: Chickens need to roost at least 30 inches up off of the ground, and have head space to do that comfortably. Roosts: 6inches per hen.
CHICKEN COOP BEDDING Chicken Coop Bedding. The floor of your chicken coop might be dirt, wood or concrete. On top of that goes bedding. To pick out the right bedding you have to understand what it does, so first I’ll explain its purpose, and then list some of the options. Birds don’t pee – everything comes out in one plop, and that pile is more than 75%liquid.
WHAT DOES YOUR HEN SAY? What Does Your Hen Say? August 17, 2013. In children’s books, roosters say cock-a-doodle-doo! and hens say cluck!. At least, that’s the way that chicken talk is written in most American storybooks. There are plenty of variations, from buk-buk tochuck-chuck –
TOOLS FOR THE COOP
I’m a firm believer that having the right tools can transform a chore into an agreeable activity. This is true in my kitchen. I’m not one to use a lot of gadgets, but having well-made tools makes the process of cooking a pleasure.EGGS FROM OLD HENS
Eggs From Old Hens. October 19, 2010. Chickens were never bred to live a long life. A hundred years ago, poor egg producers were harvested for meat after their first laying season. About half of the flock would be kept through to their second winter, when they were all butchered. This is the where the term dual-purpose hen comes from. EPSOM SALT SOAK FOR A HEN It’s enough that the epsom salts reach the skin of her bottom. Once in the water, the hen usually settles and relaxes. Opal did. I let her soak until the water turned tepid, about 15 minutes. Wet feathers allow you to take a good look at the vent area. Many good layers, like Opal, have few feathers inCHICKEN BEDTIME
When i was in a beginner in keeping chickens, i had real big problem with their bedtime. once i was wondering, that they don’t want to go iniside. i thought that the want to fool me. but of course, at the end it was my mistake. the coop was full of millions and THIN-SHELLED EGGS, OLD HENS, AND THE MIRACLE DIET CURE None of the hens in the HenCam coop are in their prime. The youngest, the Golden Comets, Agnes and Philomena, are two years of age. The oldest, the Barred Rocks, are seven.FISHER CAT TRACKS

------------------------- Welcome to the HenCam! I live in a small town west of Boston, in the United States. I don’t have a real farm, but I do have a backyard big enough for chickens, two goats, dogs, a rabbit, a pond with koi, and a garden. This website is where I share my backyard animals (via the cams) and chicken keeping expertise (via a blog and FAQs.) I also am an author of cookbooks, children’s books and collections of vintage photographs. There are three separate cams. The view shows each cam for a few minutes, and then rotates to the next. First is the main HenCam showing the outside run where eight hens live. Next is a cam showing the hens inside of the big barn. Finally, another outside cam in the run where Phoebe the bunny lives. This cam shows the goats, too. The cams have sound! Turn up the volume to hear the hens. HenCam was streamed live from September 2005 until March 2019.
