HARPSEALS.ORG ON TWITTER HARPSEALS.ORG IS A 501(C)(3) NON-PROFIT CHARITY WORKING TO END THE SLAUGHTER OF HARP SEALS IN CANADA CANADIAN FISHERMEN KILLED OVER 32,102 SEALS IN 2019 SEALING TOOK PLACE IN THE GULF IN 2020, WITH 2,115 HARP SEALS KILLED THE COMMERCIAL HARP SEAL 'HUNT' HAS NOT BEGUN ON THE FRONT DUE TO COVID-19, BUT NEWFOUNDLAND SEALERS ARE ALLOWED TO KILL SEAL PUPS FOR PERSONAL USE, AS OF 6 AM APRIL 22. Sealer dragging killed harp seal pup onto bloody sealing boat. HSIimage
Canada's Department of Fisheries and Oceans has not yet decided when sealing will begin on the Front (Newfoundland and Labrador). The longer the delay, the more seals will be saved. Last year, sealers killed 32,102 harp seal pups. This just over half the number who were killed in 2018: 59,148. In neither case does this figure include seals who were "struck and lost" (i.e., injured sealswho got away).
In 2018, this figure does include a "secret" number of adult seals, at most 11,654, who were killed between January and April 12, the first day of the seal pup slaughter. These seals were killed for their blubber, which was made into seal oil "health supplements." Though the killing takes place over several weeks, the highest rates of kiling are in the first two to three weeks. Those who kills the seal pups are off-season commercial fishermen in Atlantic Canada. This is distinct from Inuit sealingand occurs in
different regions. The commercial fishermen club and shoot harp seal pups each year in their nurseries on the ice floes in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, and just as they are learning to swim off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador. Almost all of the harp seals killed are pups between 3 weeks and 3 months of age. THIS SLAUGHTER IS NOT ONLY APPROVED BY CANADA'S GOVERNMENT, THE GOVERNMENT PROMOTES, SUBSIDIZES, AND FACILITATES THIS SLAUGHTER. In many years, thousands to tens of thousands of harp seal pups drown before they are able to swim, due to a lack of sturdy sea ice. This year, the sea ice in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, a major pupping area, was poor during the pupping time in February and March. This means that most of the seal pups who were born on the ice in that area probably drowned. Still, Prime Minister Trudeau allows sealers to kill those who have survived the effects of climate change, in violation of the Precautionary Principle. CANADIAN FISHERMEN ARE PUSHING FOR MORE SEALING - IN FACT, FOR CULLINGSEALS
Both on the west coast of Canada and on the east coast of Canada, commercial fishermen complain that seals and sea lions are eating too many fish, that they are causing declines in fish populations, and that they are interfering with their fishing activities. Some on the west coast have formed an organization to demand culling of seals and sea lions. A few of these fishermen are even injuring seals and sea lions with explosives and by shooting them. On the east coast, while the DFO continues to sanction directed cod fisheries and capelin fisheries(cod rely on
capelin as a main food source) that exceed scientific guidance, fishermen are demanding an expanded harp seal "hunt" or cull and a grey seal cull. Harp seals and grey seals eat cod , but they also eat many other species, including some that prey upon cod. In 2017, the DFO reports that almost 46 million pounds of cod were killed in directed fisheries in the Newfoundland region. Over 800,000 pounds of cod were killed in directed fisheries in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence and the Scotian shelf and almost half a million more pounds of cod were killed in Georges Bank. In that year, over 48 million pounds of capelin were killed in Atlantic Canada. Harpseals.org is working on this issue of proposed seal and sea lion culls. We are interviewing scientists and working on a short documentary series. Watch the trailer here. Then please donate to enable us to complete this project and distribute it all over Canada. Sealer clubbing beater seal pup. Photo: HSUS / Brian Skerry WONDERING WHY THESE SEALS ARE KILLED? Atlantic Canadian off-season fishermen choose to go off seasonal unemployment insurance early to kill harp seal pups for their fur. But there's more to it than this. Politics and scapegoating seals are factors, too. Read more about the Canadian seal 'hunt' here.
WHAT ROLE DO POLITICS AND PROPAGANDA PLAY IN THE PERSISTENCE OF THISATROCITY?
Canada's government has a long history of funding and promoting the commercial seal 'hunt'. The government agency responsible for managing the seal 'hunt', the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, has a history of using seals as scapegoats when they failed to manage fisheries well. Read more about the government's role in sealing.
ARE INUIT INVOLVED IN THE SEAL 'HUNT'? The commercial seal 'hunt' of Atlantic Canada is distinct from Inuit seal hunting. Whereas Atlantic Canadian off season fishermen mostly target harp seal pups, Inuit mostly kill adult ringed seals. Inuit, who mainly live in and kill seals from Nunavut, are not subject to the regulations (time frames, quotas) to which the off-season fishermen of Newfoundland and the Magdalen Islands are subject. Most Inuit sealers target adult seals because their main motivation is to consume the seal flesh, and adults have much more flesh than pups. Inuit also use, share, or sell seal skins as a secondary product and sometimes assource of income.
Some people refer to Inuit sealing as 'subsistence' sealing. This is debatable. Nevertheless, Inuit have an exemption from the EU ban on seal imports if the seal skins are obtained from their traditional killing; not if they target seal pups just for their fur, like the off-season Atlantic Canadian fishermen do. Read more about Inuit sealing.

A small group of Namibian men separate a group of nursing Cape fur seal pups from their mothers each day in their coastal rookeries, from July 1 to mid-November. Why is Canada's harp seal slaughter ecologically reckless? Harp seal pup and mother on small ice floe in Gulf of St. Lawrence.Photo: Canada DFO
Harp seals are affected by climate change. Mother seals look for large sturdy ice floes on which to give birth to their pups, since the pups can't swim for weeks after being born. Climate change is making good ice floes hard to find.Learn more here .
Are other species of seals in jeopardy in Canada? Grey seal. Photo:Dr. Pierre Yves-Daoust Grey seals are also killed in Canada, but not in as great numbers as harp seals. Some grey seals are killed to sell their pelts or other body parts. Fishermen also seek to slaughter grey seals because they believe that these seals are reducing populations of fish they wish tocatch.
Learn more about grey seal kills here.
Has anything changed over the years? The seal 'hunt' has changed over the years , and several events have helped to reduce the level of killing. The year 2009 was a major turning point. This is when the European Union banned imports of seal fur and other products made from seals. After this announcement, markets for seal products plummeted and thekilling declined.
