So I have to admit sometimes I _perasan _(fancy myself) American and follow American news a little too closely. Like I feel secondhand rage about Trump being president, about the unfair deaths of black victimslike Trayvon Martin
, Sandra
Bland , Michael
Brown and
Eric Garner , and
about the extortionate prices of medication thanks to Big Pharma greed . I also watch basically all the liberal left-wing night-time talk shows like Late Night with Seth Myers , Last Week Tonight with John Oliver and The Daily Show withTrevor Noah
— which is ridiculous. I think it’s a habit that started from when I was studying in the US and had a raging crush on Jon Stewart back when he was the host of The Daily Show. I even got tickets to be part of the studio audience TWICE like an absolute groupie LOL young me. Anyway recently I was watching yet another liberal programme The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, when he
announced that the musical guest was Incubus, singing Drive!!! OKAY I mean I had such a huge crush on frontman BRANDON BOYD back in school!! His voice is no longer what it used to be but goshhh still love him (even though he is slowly transforming into Anthony Kiedis). Listening to him sing that song in 2019 took me RIGHT BACK to like 2001, so I’m gonna leave you guys with the original video to refresh your memories (of his shirtless days). Delicious piece of trivia: Brandon Boyd did all the drawings in the video himself!! Beautiful AND talented, good lord. ANYWAYYYYYYY FINALLY let’s get down to brass tacks, sorry for thatdetour.
I wanted to blog about my experience at PEPPERCORN, the halal joint at Kandahar St specialising in mala-tang. Má refers to that numbing sensation you get from sichuan peppercorns, là means spice, and tàngmeans soup!
The entrance!
So basically the concept at Peppercorn is not unlike fancy Yong Tau Foo except it’s weight-based and not per-item. There’s a whole wall of ingredients that you can pick from, which are then priced up based on their weight and unit price. So here are the steps to getting your piping hot bowl of malatang.Report this ad
STEP 1: Pick the ingredients you want from their spread below! I found all the ingredients to look really fresh, and def tasted it inthe ones I picked
STEP 2: Head to the counter and select the spice level/type of noodles you wish to add to your bowl of malatang (optional). Choice of udon, maggi, and tang hoon noodles! STEP 3: Pick a side while they price up your order based on the unit price of the ingredients clearly displayed on the menu board! Ingredients will be priced up based on their unit price above. You canopt for sides too!
STEP 4: Choose between soup, dry, or soup on the side. Wait for the order to be ready while you admire the decor of the place and read up on malatang history. Quirky mildly propagandistic décor. A history in case y’all want to read. Goodbye body dampness, hello balanced constitution. STEP 5: Malatang is served. SHOW IT WHO’S BOSS. This is what my bowl of medium spice level malatang looked like! Okay so for my ingredients I picked enoki mushrooms (AN ABSOLUTE MUST), ladies fingers, fish tofu, oyster mushrooms, a small filet of fish, beancurd skin and a slice of beef to try, no noodles. Winning ingredients really IMO, and my bowl cost me S$17! All the ingredients tasted fresh, esp the fish which was really great because you do take a risk whenever you order fish. The broth tasted really clean and not oily which is a bonus. I’ve tried both the medium and big spicy levels. Because I find that the taste of the broth intensifies the more you eat, the medium starts out a little bland and ends up pretty tasty, while the spicy starts out really tasty but the heat sneaks up on you and suddenly you’re crying and your nose is running. SO shiok though! I must say I def prefer the big spicy level. 8.5/10 I also tried the SCALLION NOODLES (S$4.50): Scallion noodles (S$4.50) on the right – meh, 6.5/10 So I found the scallion noodles a little underwhelming – it reminded me of Indomie, so if that’s your thing you might like this. I’m more of a tom yam instant noodles person to begin with, and also I felt like $4.50 was a little steep considering I was already paying $17 for my bowl. I’d def stick to the malatang, yum. 6.5/10 for thescallion noods.
Overall I had a great time at Peppercorn – it’s really comfortable, air-conditioned, and there is a very clean and relatively spacious restroom available (compared to the usual chokey-like toilets in shophouses in the area lol). Service is always very patient and friendly, which is really great. I would def (and have, lol) come back to this place again. FYI GST and service charge apply.PEPPERCORN

THE BRAVERY CAFE ON HORNE ROAD Posted on July 7, 2019by halalicious

Online menu: Click here Online reservations: Click here Whatsapp reservations: +65 9388 2973OPENING HOURS
Sun to Thu: 9am to 6pm Fri to Sat: 9am to 10pm Halal status: Muslim-owned Halalicious rating: 9.5/10 Average spend per pax: ~S$17-22 Recommended dishes: Eggs on Toast with add-ons (my perfect plate costs $18.50), Salmon Bagel Set (S$14.50), Salmon RIce Bowl (S$12.50) Okay so this being sick and having to stay home thing is really doing wonders for my blogging frequency. Today I felt like blogging about my favourite brunch spot THE BRAVERY at Horne Road. I went there for the first time some time in the middle of 2016 (literally, my first ever review of the place and it was like average, LOL.) I wasn’t too ravey about the food, but look now I’m all _hey guys this mah fave spot check it out_. So what’s changed? Not the decor because it still pretty much looks the same, with the non-obvious doors and the same cosy-industrial-chic feel. No more metallic horse sculpture on the common table though, sad. The decor is pretty much the same as in 2016, sans metallic horsewhich we all miss.
I think the menu is pretty much the same (please refer to this one on their website for accuracy): I think they change this quite regularly so it may not be there by my/your next visit LOL I think what’s changed is perhaps their portions? Also now I’ve figured out the perfect items to order!! My absolute favourite thing to do here is to build my own brunch platter like so: Toast with poached eggs (S$8), avocado (S$2.50), sautéed mushrooms (S$3) and beef sausage (S$5). Gosh my mouth is watering. 10/10 Can you tell these are the exact same orders from two different visits? So to start I go for the basic POACHED EGGS ON TOAST (S$8), add a HALF AVOCADO ($2.50), SAUTÉED MUSHROOMS (S$3) and BEEF SAUSAGE (S$5) so it all adds up to $18.50 for this plate of beauty. Quite expensive but idk i derive SO much pleasure from it. You can skip the mushrooms, they’re still filling enough without. I also sometimes swap out the beef sausage with smoked salmon to make it a little healthier. YUMMMMM. 10/10 would recommend. Also if you guys want to recreate this at home to save money you can try using Saudia’s Halal Smoked Gouda Chicken and Beef Sausage (I bought mine from Redmart) because they areSOOOO good.

My friend got the BAGEL SET (S$14.50) when we brunched together and NGL it was also pretty good! Bagel Set (S$14.50) – 9.5/10. I love that it has a bit of everything in it. Cream cheese cubezzzz yassss. The bagel was pretty good; chewy but not tough, soft but with good bite. I def prefer poached eggs over scrambled eggs, so I hope they still let us have the option to have the eggs poached the next time I visit! Their online menu only says scrambled eggs so I am a little worried LOL. 9.5/10 for the bagel set. On one of my other visits, I had a friend visiting from KL who had the Salmon Rice Bowl (S$12.90) and really enjoyed it: Salmon Rice Bowl ($12.90) – not bad but my build-a-brunch will always be better. 9/10 The salmon chunks, edamame, diced tomato and onions are lightly coated in a Japanese marinade, and served on a bed of brown rice. It’s def really nutritious but I really disliked the raw onion taste and TBH I would have A Poke Theory any day over this, but objectively this is a really good bowl for the more health conscious eaters who find themselves at The Bravery. I guess as a creature of habit I’ll always want my usual brunchy platters whenever I come here. still, 9/10 for the salmon rice bowl. I like to end my weekend meals here with a cup of Flat White, which is usually pretty solid: Yummy flat white, perfect for sipping in between some weekend reading So yeah that’s The Bravery for you – good honest food, great chill ambience for weekend catchups with friends or a solo coffee while reading. Service is attentive (you order and pay at the counter but sometimes if there’s hardly anyone around they’ll close one eye and let you pay later.) Thankfully no one really reads my blog so it’s not like the the crowds are gonna be ruining the place for meanytime soon lol.

AROMA KAMPUNG AT JOO CHIAT COMPLEX Posted on July 6, 2019by halalicious

So a few weeks before Ramadan began, I was in the Geylang Serai area running some errands with my mum and we were looking to have a late lunch somewhere. I was all, uh how about Kucina at OneKM (okay it’s now KINEX, but I hate that name. Not that OneKM was much better to begin with) since it’s a nice comfortable place – but then my mum was like_ I know a place_ all mysterious like. And then she led me into Joo Chiat Complex, up to the third floor, and across a short walkway to this restaurant called Aroma Kampung. Wow almost like a speakeasy (LOL NO LAH) The entrance So Aroma Kampung is a Nasi Melayu place serving over forty types of Malay dishes, buffet-style. You take however _many_ dishes you want, and however _much_ of a dish you want, and at the end of it they will calculate the damage for you at the counter, and then you can eat inpeace.
Check out the extensive spread omg. For real I was like a kid in a candy store. Except I was being a makcik in Lauk Land. They had sooo many things, from shellfish such as mussels, _siput sedut_ (chut chut), cockles and clams) to fish like stingray _asam pedas_, fried _ikan selar_ and other fish i know not the names of, to meat dishes like beef rendang, chicken lemak, fried chicken, to random lovable dishes like quail eggs in sambal, and finally to seafood dishes like my favourite _sotong masak hitam_ (or squid in squid ink sauce). I think I recall seeing crabs in lemak gravy, and prawns of some sort but tbh I only had eyes for the siput sedut and the sotonghitam.
Flatlay lol, or our “Sur la table”. Basically all this includingdrinks cost $23.
Yum so I took some sotong hitam (two “bodies” of it) and a piece of fried tempeh, some sambal eggplant and a piece of stingray asam pedas, and oh let’s not forget the bowl of lemak siput sedut.UGHHH my fave.
So yeah if you guys had seen my IG stories when I posted about it, you’d have seen in the video how thick and legit the squid ink gravy was, for the _sotong hitam_ ugh it was almost like how my late aunt used to cook it. For real it was like #000000 black lol. I LOVED IT. The_ siput sedut _was also really good and tasty, except that I felt the gravy could have been just slightly thicker and a bit more savoury. The eggplant was so plump and fresh, although the sauce was too oily. More of the chilli paste, less of the oil nexttime please!
Report this ad
I actually pretty much enjoyed everything except for the stingray which was quite lumpy. Hate it when the stingray flesh is like one fused glob. Is that what happens when it’s undercooked or is it just the quality of the fish? IDK. My mum had the rendang and some leafy dish (I think it was _lemak pucuk ubi_. Very yummy too.) and she also had the squid and the eggplant. All in all Aroma Kampung definitely passes the home-cooked taste test. Anyway I’m def dying to go back for another pick’n’mix session. I love having a bit of everything (which is why I _excel_ in buffets) rather than like one thing, so this place is ideal for me. I think the price is pretty reasonable too, like it worked out to be $11.50 per person inclusive of drinks. FYI there is a whole ulam section for those who are really really kampung haha. Also the place is air-conditioned, comfortable and there are sinks for you to wash your hands if, like me, you prefer to eat with your hands instead of forkand spoon.
Bonus, they also do weddings! I think it could be a really cool, comfortable place for a small reception and you KNOW the food is going to be bombbbbb (please ISD I am only using it slangily). There’s a neat pelamin area if anyone wants to host an intimatewedding here!

Hey guys! My head feels like it’s full of cotton wool because I’m down with the flu today, ugh why is my body failing me. Anyway I’ve been in bed alternating between sleep, eating porridge and watching Crazy Ex-Girlfriend on Netflix – finally finished watching Season 3 and now onto Season 4 lol. It’s such a great show you guys, you don’t even understand. So ahead of its time. Also, one of the characters that I love, Heather, is portrayed by Vella Lovell who looks totally like she’s ethnically Indian, but is actually mix-raced black and white. I know it’s crazy and race is a social construct yada yada but it boggles the mind that she’s not even a little bit ethnically Indianhaha
Anyway I wanted to quickly post about YI ZUN BEEF NOODLE‘s new (ish?!) outlet at Joo Chiat Road which is a lot more of a proper family restaurant than their more casual Sam Leong Road outlet near Farrer Park MRT. I actually went there during Ramadan a couple of months ago to break fast with my family. Taken from their Facebook page – you can see it’s a lot more spacious and with bigger tables too Boy, isn’t dining out during Ramadan always a sh*t show? Like you can’t ever just _walk in_ anywhere because (a) they’re always booked up anyway or (b) the stakes are too high and you just can’t chance it without a reservation because you’d be starving by then. Ugh. But ACTUALLY I realised the best thing to do when you have weekend errands in the Joo Chiat/Geylang area during Ramadan is to buy your raya stuff around 2-4pm and then takeaway _lauk_ (dishes) fromAroma Kampung
and be out of there by 430pm before traffic starts getting reallycrazy.

Before I discovered this life hack though, on one of the weekends when we had to buy some Raya stuff around Geylang bazaar area, we figured we might as well have dinner there. So I picked Yi Zun Beef Noodles since I hadn’t been to their new Joo Chiat outlet then. Here’s a look at their menu: Combos, sides and dranks So many dishes to choose from gosh. Halal xiao long bao yummmReport this ad
We ordered the YIZUN IKAN BAKAR SPECIAL (S$19.80) which is a little like those Chong Qing Grilled Fish places featuring a whole fish on a heated platter, bathed in a type of broth and accompanied by othertypes of veggies:
Yizun Ikan Bakar Special (S$19.80) – 8/10 So, i thought this was a decent offering. The fish was pretty tender, if a little skinny but gosh S$19.80 is a great price. There was some cabbage and enoki mushrooms, which are always welcome. The broth wasn’t too spicy, it had a bit of a mala taste to it but overall pretty mild so don’t be scared by the colour. Glad it wasn’t spicier because you know, Ramadan stomach. Never forget that one time my friend and I broke our fast on medium-spicy mala xiang guo at TTSH, and died for the next 24 hours. I did wish they had a lot more broth on the platter, which was a little shallow to begin with. Also I wish they had the option for us to top up for additional ingredients like more enoki mushrooms, maybe some tofu, etc. I’d say just a little shy of 8/10. I def wanna go back and try it again, maybe it’ll be better on the second try. Of course we also ordered the classic YI ZUN BEEF NOODLE (S$9.80) which only came in one size unlike the Sam Leong Road branch: Yizun Beef Noodles (S$9.80) – 7/10 I don’t know why but the noodles weren’t great that night. They got a little jelak for me and maybe I should just stick to the minced meat version which usually always hits the spot for me. The beef slices were okay if a little tough, though I love the tender radish always. The broth was decent. And I almost feel bad for saying this but for Lanzhou Lamian I prefer the Tongue Tip noodle version! So so good. Maybe I’ll post about that time I went to the Tiong Bahru branch and ordered the one with the mala soup. Yum. Anyway, 7/10 forthis one.
Report this ad
We also ordered the SIZZLING HOTPLATE BEEF (S$16.80) which was really very yummy – the beef was tender and the sauce was like some sort of savoury kung pao sauce, but unfortunately I did not take a photo of it because it came a little later and I was already busy eating then. I have to say I wish they served rice?! So you can eat with the dishes, but no they force you to order the noodles lol. 9/10 for the beef. All in all not a bad dinner and I would def like to come back for the grilled fish and try other things. I might skip the noodles and maybe opt for the CHICKEN XIAO LONG BAO (S$3.80 FOR 4) and I really wanna try the MUTTON SKEWERS (S$2 A STICK) _(edited to add: I tried both the chicken xlb and the mutton skewers a week after this post. They were both DELICIOUS. I would def recommend)._ Service was friendly but because it was Ramadan when I went, the guys were pretty slammed and they ran out of proper cutlery so we had to eat with wooden chopsticks and plastic spoons UGH very very not ideal, but I’m sure my next visit will be better. TBH writing about this close to midnight I wish I could have some of that fish now although my throat would probably just get even more swollen sigh.YI ZUN BEEF NOODLE

I know what you’re thinking – _back so fast?! It hasn’t even been 4 months yet since your last post. _LOL OKAY. I just felt like posting another review quickly before the feeling goes away! TBH I was torn between this and watching Crazy Ex-Girlfriend on Netflix, but okay I’m giving myself 30 mins. I need to rewatch Season 3 before starting Season 4 which just got released! Also I’m just going to throw this out there – if you guys haven’t listened to the Serialpodcast on Spotify
/ Apple Podcast
/ Castbox
etc, please give it a go! Season 1 on Adnan Syed’s supposed murder of his ex-gf Hae Min Leewas crazy. I’m
now on Season 3 which is about Cleveland’s justice system. Sounds boring but it’s actually really gripping and you just end up marvelling almost, at how stacked the system is against the blackresidents there.
Anyway I wanted to post about my new fave ramen spot in town, ICHIKOKUDO ! Their first outlet was opened in July 2018 at Suntec City, while the second outlet opened at Somerset 313 in March this year! They recently opened their third outlet at China Square in May, but I’ve yet to go to that one. View of from the outside, at Somerset 313 basement 3 with all the food outlets! Feel free to also read this feature from Berita Minggu I totally snapped a pic of, at the Suntec branch: I really like the word Jepun lol but I disapprove of “pes”for paste.
The outlet at Suntec is a bit annoying to get to – I mean that place is such a maze and I just do not have the kind of energy required to navigate the different towers and atria. So this second outlet at Somerset 313 is PERFECT because I LOVE Somerset (can buy strawbs fromDon Don Donki LOL).

I came here for buka puasa a few weeks ago and started with the SALMON SASHIMI (S$7.90) and the HOKKAIDO BUTTER CLAMS ($6.90). Mix of regular and lightly broiled salmon (S$7.90) Hokkaido Butter Clams (S6.90) – a little dry IMO Okay so I actually really like the salmon, and perhaps even preferred the broiled version to the regular version because of the light char. I did think that the slices were a little thin, so hopefully that’s something they can improve on. $7.90 isn’t too bad but I’d rather thicker slices, so ideally it’d be like 6 thicker slices for $7.90 or 8 slices for $9.90 ( LOL what am I a pricing analyst?) Anyway the math tells you that 8 slices for $9.90 saves you about 8 cents a slice LOL. 7.5/10 for the salmon sashimi!Report this ad
The butter clams were a little disappointing, because the clams were a little dry and there wasn’t a lot of them to begin with. Of course I compared them to the plump clams from Deanna’s Kitchen’s prawnnoodles
,
where you get literally like 25-30 clams when you order the $6.50 bowl of prawn noodles with clams LOL. I’d say skip the clams unless you’re craving. 6/10 For mains, I ordered the regular ICHIKOKUDO RAMEN (S$10.90) which features a full ramen egg, bamboo shoots, chicken chashu slices, woodear mushroom and aosa seaweed . All of these ingredients are bathed in their super umami and tasty broth made from chicken bone, mackerel, bonito and kelp: Ichikokudo Ramen (S10.90) – 9.5/10. SUPER delicious and savoury. Just a touch oily, but manageable. I loved it!! And it’s not just because I had been fasting the whole day lol. For real, the broth was done just right that night. I think the first time I went to the Suntec branch, I found the regular broth a little salty, but that particular night at the Somerset branch the broth was on point. I LOVE the seasoned egg with the gooey yolk, and all the textures of the different ingredients alternately crunchy and chewy. At some other places I’ve been to, the bamboo shoots can taste a little too strong, but Ichikokudo’s were great and inoffensive. Noodles were also really good!! No weird lye taste, great bite, and well-coated in the broth. 9.5/10 My friend had the ICHI-BEEF RAMEN (S$13.90) which he really enjoyed. I had a bite of it and found the beef slices to be really tender and perfect, kind of like Gyunion’s beef strips YUM. Here is a photo of his bowl: Ichi Beef Ramen ($13.90)- basically similar to the Ichikokudo ramen but with the chicken chashu swapped with beef slices. Also 9.5/10
My other friend opted for another popular choice (popular based on what I’m seeing on IG LOL), the HOKKAI JIGOKU SMOKED DUCK RAMEN(S$15.90):
Ichi Smoked Duck Ramen (S$15.90) – 8/10 because the brothis crazy yum.
Wow this was really interesting – the description on the menu says that the broth is a blend of spicy miso and their signature soup stock. To me it tasted like a mix of mala and curry, if that makes any sense. Very yummy and def for those who prefer a spicy kick. To be clear though they do offer condiments like chilli oil and togarashi chilli powder that you can liberally season your ramens with. I personally found the smoked duck pairing a little off, like the strong broth overpowered the taste of the duck. I might actually order smoked duck slices as a side hehe. Regardless, a solid 8/10 because the broth is unfff._ (edited to add: I recently tried the shoyu ramen version with the smoked duck for S$13.90, and they went SO well together. Def getting more next time!!)_Report this ad
Bonus picture of the HOKKAI SALMON IKURA DON (S$16.90) that my other friend had during another visit to Ichikokudo, in case you guys like looking at my #real photos: Hokkai Salmon Ikura Don (S$16.90) All in all, I had a super pleasant time at Ichikokudo Ramen. Service is polite and quick; you place your order through an iPad which is really great because God forbid your order gets held up simply because you can’t get a waiter’s attention lol (I get hangry really easily help). GST and service charge applies, FYI. I would def come back from time to time for my Hokkaido ramen fix especially since I find myself in the Somerset area quite frequently. Anyway I’ll leave you guys with pictures of the menu below, enjoy!*

HALAL STATUS: HALAL-CERTIFIED HALALICIOUS RATING: 9/10 AVERAGE SPEND PER PAX: S$7 LOL BUT IT WASN’T A FULL MEAL RECOMMENDED DISHES: SO FAR, THE CREAMY TOM YUM AND THE PATHUMTHANI BOAT NOODLES AT S$1.50 PER BOWL Hey guys! Gosh I know I’ve been totally MIA (except on IG stories haha addicted to IG ngl). Ramadan and Raya were both really all-consuming, like I managed to have a pretty good “Reset Ramadan” where I was a lot better with the 5-times-a-day praying and recited the Quran daily (who _am_ I?!) TBH I wasn’t really expecting to have such a spiritual Ramadan this year, so alhamdulillah for His grace. And of course Raya was all about visiting, hosting and nonstop eating?!?! Gosh. I hope you guys had a good Syawal. I’m pretty happy it’s coming to an end though I need my weekends back haha nervouslaughter.
Apart from that, in the secular world I’ve been bingeing on quite a lot of good tv series – I swear (and I’ve been saying this for the past few years) we are living in the golden age of television. Let’ssee – FLEABAG
on
Amazon Prime (but I just streamed it lol soz) is SOOOOOO good please just go watch, and Ava Duvernay’s WHEN THEY SEE US is so gut-wrenching and powerful and moving. Also started on Season 2 of THE HANDMAID’S TALE.
Sometimes I feel like I should just be like JASON KOTTKE and do a post on my media diet since I love sharing about it so much lol. Aaaanyway. On to food. Today I was out with a friend and she was going to get lunch whereas I already had food waiting at home for me (salmon steamed with ginger, scallion and garlic my gosh. Lush.) But she suggested BOAT NOODLES at Bugis Junction and I’d always wanted to try (tbh no idea what boat noodles were all about so I read the wiki entry on Boat Noodles ) > Boat noodles have been served since the period of Plaek> Phibunsongkhram
> in 1942, and
> were originally served from boats that traversed Bangkok’s> canals.
>

> Nowadays the dish is also served in restaurants, but the dish’s > historical identity is maintained by it still being served in a > small bowl, and often with a boat moored in front of the place. Pretty cool, and gosh it’s traditionally super porky so thank god for halal versions. Here’s a look at the exterior and interior ofthe place:
Looking up at the level 2 establishment from level one of Bugis Village! Right at the entrance of the place, and super reassuring lol There are two seating sections – I was in the back area which felt a lot more private and quiet, this view is of the main area So here is the menu: As a snacky person, I LOVE this menu. so many small things to choose from! Also, halal kuey chap curious to try next time Oh they also have a short history of them small bowls on the menu! Order chit, nbd The boat noodles come in these small bowls that technically could be finished in anywhere between 1-3 mouthfuls, so they were perfectly customizable and “stackable” to suit the needs of _both_ a mere snacker _and_ someone looking for a full meal. I ordered two bowls at S$1.50 each, as I still needed to eat at home with the fam.Report this ad
I went for the PATHUMTHANI BEEF NOODLES (S$1.50) with rice noodles (you can also choose springy noodles, which I assume are like Maggi noodles), and the CREAMY TOM YUM CHICKEN NOODLES (S$1.50): Creamy tom yum noodles with chicken on top, Pathumthani noodles with beef below, S$1.50 each. Both were really good, but I def preferred the creamy tom yum broth!! The pathumthani broth was really rich and slightly sweet. My friend loved it and in fact preferred it to the creamy tom yum broth. I was the opposite – I liked the pathumthani broth _enough_, but found the creamy tom yum broth absolutely delicious. It didn’t taste like instant noodle broth, which was surprising. I thought at these prices they’d surely taste like Mama noodle broth lol not that that’s a bad thing. Both the chicken and meat balls were decent enough, and a welcome addition to a $1.50 bowl. I’m not sure it’d be worth it to stack like 10 bowls if you’re a big guy looking to sate your ravenous appetite (maybe?!! Actually 10 bowls is still only S$15) but for those looking for variety I think it’s a pretty good deal. My friend ordered a PAD THAI (S$8.90) which smelled pretty amazing but I didn’t try as I was really saving my appetite for lunch at home. Here’s how it looked like: Pad Thai – S$8.90 (I didn’t try it tho!) So all in all it was a pretty casual comfortable place to eat. GST and service charge are applicable, but you still get table service which was pretty decent, smiley and fast. You submit your order chit to the waiter, and you pay at the counter after. I would deffff come back here for a full meal next time, especially since it’s in a pretty convenient location at Bugis Junction! There’s also the original outlet at Changi City Point, but as a Westie I’m pretty confident I might not make it all the way there anytime soon lol. Also they only serve bottled mineral water at S$1.90 so just bring your own water bottle if you hate paying for water (like me).Report this ad

HALAL STATUS: MUSLIM-OWNED HALALICIOUS RATING: 10/10 AVERAGE SPEND PER PAX: S$9.90 RECOMMENDED DISHES: ORIGINAL GYUDON (S$7.90 A LA CARTE, S$9.90 LUNCH SET WITH ONSEN EGG AND A DRINK) Hey guys! Has anyone watched the Season 8 premiere of Game of Thrones? GOSHHHHH I’m so glad it’s here although I really wish I could binge all 6 final episodes in one sitting ugh. In a way I envy all those people who haven’t watched a single episode of GoT, like they have ALL these episodes waiting to be binged. Jealllll ugh. I’ve also blazed through the newly-released Season 3 of Kim’sConvenience
and 2
seasons of Man Like Mobeen . Both shows offer a refreshing look at the everyday lives of minority migrant communities, using humour for levity. I love both shows so much, please catch them on Netflix if you’re looking for new shows to watch! Anyway on to food (lol always forcing you guys to read non-food things in my intros) – another short post for you today and it’s about my fave lunch spot, GYUNION ! This logo, taken from their FB page, is way too cool for me. I loveit.
Tucked away in the corner of Sunshine Plaza, GYUNION is a cosy little Muji-esque hideout with about 5-6 tables. It can’t fit too many people in one sitting, but somehow my friend and I always manage to snag the last table for lunch. People tend to finish up quickly and give up their seats once they’re done, so don’t worry too much about the wait. I love the minimalist, super Japanese aesthetic. My phone photo album is so disorganised I couldn’t find a photo of the interior, even though I swear I’ve taken one – but I’ll try next time and update this post with a photo Anyway here’s the menu!Report this ad
My personal fave thing on the menu is the original GYUDON (S$7.90) which features beatifully tender strips of marinated beef over a bowl of japanese rice. I usually get it as a lunch set (+S$2) which includes an onsen egg and a choice of green tea or Coke. Beef Gyudon (S$7.90 a la carte, or S$9.90 with lunch set) – 10/10 for real so simple and so good Clearly from another sitting lol. I love these beef stripssss help.Report this ad
Yummmm the beef slices are always so tender and well-marinated without being overpowering. I would defff recommend you guys always add an egg into the bowl because it just makes every bite that much juicier and more satisfying. They also provide condiments like shoyu, sesame seeds (UNFFF MY FAVE I let it rainnnn sesame seeds on my Gyudon) and chilli powder (togarashi I think?) so you can customize your bowl to yourtaste.
Over the past few months I’ve also tried the CURRY GYUDON (S$7.90) which is really quite good as well but I always find the curry overwhelming towards the end. My lunch buddy LOVES it thoooo Curry Gyudon (S$7.90) – bit too intense for me but my lunch buddyloves it
What our usual lunch orders look like LOL creatures of habitReport this ad
Besides the original Beef Gyudon I also really like the CHEESY GYUDON (S$8.90). It was cheesy but still light enough as to not be super jelak. Quite a solid offering but tbh I really prefer just the original which tastes a lot cleaner. Cheesy Gyudon (S$8.90) – yummm but can’t beat the original All in all, Gyunion is just a really great place to get your japanese beef bowl fix unfff. You can check out the Gyumen too which is the noodle series but I always just immediately go for the Gyudon lol it’s toooo gooodddd. Will deff keep coming back here for as long as I can! Service is always so polite and discreet too – love the owners. I hope you guys get to try it for yourselves soon!GYUNION
