HACK 1: BE PRESENT AND ENGAGED Although hacking school leadership involves enacting many changes in our practices, the first and most important change transforms a principal from being a disengaged administrator to an instructional lead learner who is visible, present, and engaged in every aspect of the school community. HACK 9: COLLABORATE AND LEARN Teachers need learning that is personalized, relevant, and easily applied to their context. Providing professional development with these qualities will encourage educators to be actively engaged in self-directed learning experiences. HACK 5 — HACKING LEADERSHIP Our ultimate purpose in telling school stories is not to self-promote or to guilt community members into being more actively involved in the school; our aim is to surround our children with trusting, nurturing, collaborative adults who prove they value education by paying attention to it, by committing to improve it. HACK 6 — HACKING LEADERSHIP This opens in a new window. Our students have important insights and valuable perspectives, and from our vantage point they are our most important "clients," so listening to our kids and acting on their ideas should be a priority. We may have to get comfortable with relinquishing some of the control, but amplifying student voice andempowering
HACK 8 — HACKING LEADERSHIP HACK 8: Passion Projects for adults empower teachers to control theirown learning
HACK 2: CREATE C.U.L.T.U.R.E The school leader embodies a school’s culture. Its leader’s words and actions represent a school’s priorities and concerns. We get a sense of culture when we witness a school leader: HACK 4 — HACKING LEADERSHIP Telling a school’s story shapes its culture, giving individuals a common identity as members of the school community. When a leader elects to become the chief storyteller, to celebrate the school’s successes, focus shifts away from the school being a disciplinary institution or training facility to rejoice in its status as alearning community.
HACK 3 — HACKING LEADERSHIP Building relationships takes time, and there are days that you will feel like you have none. Dealing with all the things on your plate and the day-to-day operations of school can get overwhelming. HACK 7: HIRE SUPERSTARS Hiring excellent staff is one of the most important things we can do for students. We want the right group of people in front of kids, people who share a positive, innovative mindset.
