GURNEY JOURNEY: COMBINING WATERCOLOR AND GOUACHE Marko, First off, there's no right way or wrong way to combine watercolor and gouache. But you don't really need to switch between them. It might help to think of gouache as a very close cousin of watercolor. In fact, gouache IS watercolor—if you use it without white. That's because, compared to the days of "designer colors,"nowadays, most

SUNDAY, AUGUST 11, 2019 MARK ENGLISH, 1933-2019 Famed illustrator Mark English(born 1933)
died on August 8. He was one of the star illustrators when I was inart school.
He helped define the world of contemporary illustration with paintings that combined abstraction with realism in a way that was expressive, elegant, and always surprising. I met him at a gathering of artists hanging out at a convention hotel eating tacos and sipping beer. Even though he was well into his 80s when I met him, in his leather jacket, he looked like he was always instyle.
Mark English in the lounge of the Kansas City Marriott, gouache. As I squeezed out my paint to sketch him, he told me he still had the gouache paints that he used in his illustration years, but he switched to painting larger canvases with house paint. Mark English "Pink Patchy Face" In his later canvases, which he made for galleries, his images edged further into abstraction. He delighted in juxtapositions of colors, textures, and shapes that hinted at portraits but dissolved into an intriguing primordial stew.----

SATURDAY, AUGUST 10, 2019AMBIGRAM
An ambigram is a word or logo which reads the same when inverted. Remarkably, the word itself can be made into an ambigram. The cover to the DVD version of "Princess Bride" is also an ambigram. John Langdon designed this one, which reads "Philosophy Art & Science" right side up or upside down. Wikipedia about Ambigram There's a nice collection online in "An Optical Illusion"

FRIDAY, AUGUST 9, 2019THE RUSTIC STYLE
In 1935, a design document from the Civilian Conservation Corpsdefined
the rustic style of architecture as one "which through the use of native materials in proper scale, and through the avoidance of rigid, straight lines, and over-sophistication, gives the feeling of having been executed by pioneer craftsmen with limited hand tools." In the field of lettering during the Golden Age of Penmanship, "rustic" tends to refer to letterforms that seems to have grown naturally. Sometimes the letters are rough-sawn. Rustic furniture also looks as if it grew naturally and as if it was made by hand with simple tools. There has been a revival of the style among builders like Daniel Mack, who made the chair above.-----

I used an updated version of the traditional sighting grid for an accurate outline of the vehicle. The video shows the sketch easel in use with the sighting grid attached to the gripper. The cheek rest piece screws into the T-nut ofthe gripper.

TUESDAY, AUGUST 6, 2019 WHAT PIGMENTS DID J.M.W. TURNER USE? According to Winsor & Newton, J.M.W. Turner's watercolor pigments included "Gamboge, Quercitron Yellow, Vermilion, various iron oxides including Ochres, Umbers and Siennas, Indian Yellow, "Green Lake", Prussian Blue, Indigo, Cobalt Blue, Blue Verditer, Rose Madder, other red lake pigments possibly Carmine, Bone Black, and Mercuric Iodide (genuine scarlet). He used water colours in a block form and there is evidence he made some, if not all, himself." Paint box of Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775 – 1851) Turner, _Dolbadarn Castle_ In oil, he used "Genuine Ultramarine (Lapis Lazuli), White Lead and a very toxic yellow, Orpiment, also known as Kings Yellow or chemically, arsenic sulphide. By the early nineteenth century, he had replaced it with Chrome Yellow. There is evidence in the 1800 painting ‘Dolbadarn Castle’ that he used the lead pigment Naples Yellow." "He also used unspecified lake pigments made by fixing a dye on a base compound such as alumina which turned a dye into a pigment. This gave the pigments great transparency in oil but less so in water. The choice of dye and base influenced the lightfastness. Turner used at least one red lake, a green and a geranium shade and all were prone to fading. Some early versions of Rose Madder had poor lightfastness but the process developed by the outstanding English colour-maker, George Field was and still is superior. This process is still followed by Winsor & Newton today." How much did the pigments overlap between his watercolor and oil paintings? Winsor & Newton says "His love of both oil and water colour meant he experimented with using the same pigment for his oil paintings as he did in his water colours. He would have discovered that Gamboge does not work in oil nor White Lead (Flake White) inwater."

MONDAY, AUGUST 5, 2019VOLUMETRIC LIGHTING
Volumetric lighting
is a concept from
3D digital graphics that can be helpful for painters to consider. Screenshot from the game Fallout 4 When smoky or dusty atmosphere is illuminated from behind, sunbeamsappear.
We painters tend to think of these beams in two-dimensional terms, but it's good to remember that they occupy a specific volume of 3D space between the source and the subject. Still from "The Man Who Wasn't There"
directed by
the Coen Brothers, cinematography by Roger Deakins If the light comes from a sharp, hard source (as opposed to a soft, diffuse one), it can take on a particular shape with fairly sharp edges. The slices of light are most visible against dark backgroundareas.
Albert Bierstadt, _Lander's Peak_ The light takes on its form as it passes through the opening in the clouds, and you can see its effect as it travels to the selective areas it illuminates.----

SUNDAY, AUGUST 4, 2019LEARNING BY COPYING
In the booklet called The Prang Elementary Course In Art Instruction,
examples are shown on the left side of the page that the student isexpected to copy.
The publisher explains that the illustrations: > "are printed to give pupils good examples of form, line, and > composition, to interest them in the work of others, to lead to a > higher standard of excellence than exists in the individual, and to > be a stimulus to help the pupils by their suggestiveness as to > subject and as to manner of rendering. They assist in providing a > regular sequence of study and save time of teacher and pupil. Good > copies are as necessary and helpful to the child as art studies to > the adult. In some cases the children may gain much by copying, > although examples are of such a character and so arranged that there > is abundant opportunity on every page for free, original, and > individual work." In the book, there are reproductions from Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Edwin Landseer, Abbott Thayer, and Winslow Homer, and others as well as decorative patterns. I had a few opportunities to trace and copy as a child of 7 or 8 years old, and later when I was an art student, and it was a revelation. I remember that's how I learned that an ellipse is a tricky way ofdrawing a circle.
Such a practice of copying may have fallen out of favor in recent decades in some settings, but it seems to be coming back. It's not the only path to mastery, but it's a very important part of the journey. How old were you when you first tried copying or tracing, and what are your memories of the experience?-----
