28 YEARS SINCE OPERATION DESERT STORM WAR IN IRAQ (Mar 19, 2003 - Dec 15, 2011) The War In Iraq (GW II) was formally ended on December 15, 2011 by United States Defense Secretary Leon Panetta. During the ceremony, the American battle flag was lowered and cased for return to the United States. Estimated casualties after nearly 9 years of war are 4,500 Americans and 100,000 Iraqis. WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THIS STUDY? The purpose of this study is to determine if acupuncture is an effective treatment for Gulf War Illness (GWI). GWI is a complex illness that presents with a variety of symptoms. Prior research has shown that acupuncture is successful when used to treat these symptoms in a civilian population. WHO CAN PARTICIPATE? We are looking for 120 Gulf War Veterans (men and women) who live in New England and were deployed to the Gulf War Region between August of 1990 and January of 1993. WHAT DOES PARTICIPATION IN THE STUDY INVOLVE? After an initial medical screen at the New England School of acupuncture in Newton, MA, participants will be placed in one of two groups. Group 1 receives FREE acupuncture twice a week for six months. Group 2 waits two months then receives FREE acupuncture once a week for four months. These treatments occur in a private acupuncturist’s office close to home or work. Three follow up visits to the New England School of Acupuncture are also required. We offer a small travel stipend in addition to the free acupuncture. Medical Center in Durham, NC, with cooperation from the VA Medical Center in Lexington, KY. The ALS Association (ALSA) is advising the study leaders. It is the story of a fictional young officer who participated in the demolition of the munitions dump at Kamisiyah. Researchers at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland have received funding from the Department of Defense to study whether or not some Gulf War veterans with unexplained symptoms have a treatable medical condition which could explain their symptoms.
