Over the last couple of years, I've been focusing on sharing a lot of fine motor skill activities on my blog and also researching fine motor development for my book, Basics of Fine Motor Skills. It's so easy to add fine motor activities intoyour day.
THE FOUNDATIONAL SKILLS NEEDED FOR HANDWRITING MECHANICS Foundational Skills Needed for Handwriting Mechanics. Does the graph above surprise you at all? If you are familiar with the pyramid of learning and the central nervous system by Taylor & Trott (1991), then this graph seems similar.. Before we can expect our children to master handwriting mechanics (or pencil grasp), we need to build these foundational skills to set them up for success. SENSORY PROCESSING AND THE TEENAGE YEARS Sensory Processing and the Teenage Years. Teens are presented with new experiences and expectations. Typically they want to gain more independence and control over their life, they are going through hormonal changes through puberty and they are presented with newsocial experiences.
FINE MOTOR SKILLS CHECKLIST FOR TODDLERS (18 MONTHS Fine Motor Skills Checklist for Toddlers. 18 months old – Most children are walking by this age and starting to move steadier and easier over uneven surfaces. Here are some fine motor skills that they will be mastering. Can put rings on pegs. Begins to hold a crayon with finger tips and thumb. 6 SENSORY ACTIVITIES FOR KIDS WHO CLIMB AND JUMP 6. Make an indoor jungle jim obstacle course. Make your DIY Crash mat from above, have pillows, bean bags chairs, wooden chairs, tunnels, or any other type of object that allows your child to climb on or through and jump on. Make an obstacle course in your house or outside. HAND DOMINANCE DEVELOPMENT IN CHILDREN Some research suggests that the preferred hand a child uses at age 18-30 months is the hand they end up using consistently later on (Archer, Campbell, Segalowitz 1988). This could account for up to 60-70% of children. That still leaves with at least 30-40% of children who may have not decided on a preferred hand until later. EYE-HAND COORDINATION ACTIVITIES FOR CHILDREN Develops the vision needed in order to start following objects with their eyes. Begin basic eye-hand activities such as grasping, reaching, feeding and dressing. Start to recognize directions such as up, down, in and out. Begin to manipulate smaller objects using 10 STATION SENSORY-MOTOR WALK ACTIVITIES FOR SCHOOL The first exercise is in the prone position (on the stomach). Have the child lay completely flat and then lift the arms and legs up off the ground at the same time. The goal is to get to 10 seconds or more of holding this position. Many children start out below 5 seconds. THE IMPORTANCE OF MESSY PLAY AND SENSORY PLAY FOR CHILDREN The Importance of Messy Play. There are some specific skills that messy play can help facilitate. PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT. You may have guessed already, but using all eight senses to explore and play leads to many great physical development skills.. Using the hands and fingers promotes fine motor development such as finger dexterity, hand strength and shoulder strength. HOW TO IMPROVE HANDWRITING WITH KIDS Pre-writing skills are the pre-cursor to handwriting. They consist of an age-appropriate sequence of lines and shapes that toddlers and preschoolers learn in order to, later on, form letters and numbers. 6 Pre-writing Activities for Preschoolers – This was a 6-week series I did on my blog with activities to encourage pre-writing lines andshapes.
